Help Needed Please On Serious And Unexpected Fit Issue
Posted by Zar on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 9:37 PM

Hi guys, I have said it before and will again that I am far from the most skilled builder but I don't think I have done anything wrong here.  I am building the 1/48th Tamiya RAF P-51 III. The upper wings will just not fit on the lower sections closest to the fuselage join. I followed the directions which say to attatch the fuseage to the lower wings and then glue the uppers to them.  Not working.  Has anyone built this kit? I am shocked, mystified, you name it that a Tamiya kit is presenting me with this problem. I have thought of trying to dislodge the wing and then try attatching them separate from the main body of the plane. Have also thought about cuttting off the ribs in the wheel wheels as they seem to be interfering with the fit.  I would appreciate any tips.  Thanks.

If you had a photo of the problem it would help out alot. This is why dry fitting parts even on Tamiya kits is a good idea. It's been awhile since I built a Tamiya mustang, but could the pit be in problem? Is it fully in? Or is the bottom wing flush and the problem just with the top part of the wing?

Just like Rambo said, add a photo. Also YouTube can help you out pretty good some times!!!

Don't cut the ribs.

This is why test fitting is always a good  idea.

I would careful;ly take the lowers back off.

Get them to fit "dry" then look at why it isn't working.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I've built a Tamiya P-51D and it was wonderful. SO, a photo would help us see what your problem most likely is and we can advise on your best course of action from there.

Thanks to all that have replied. I have built a few of them and all were great. Tamiya is my favorite brand because I like kits that fit.  That is why this is so perplexing. To answer questions, first I know pictures would be a big help but I don't have capability just now.  The cockpit is not an issue, fit in like a dream. Everything had been "Tamiya like" until the joining of the wing tops to the bottoms.   I have removed the lower wing from the fuselage and will see what happens now.  I'll let you know how it comes out.  Thanks!

Gentlemen, problem solved. With the wings separate and doing some unhindered test fitting, it aappears the ribs on the upper wings, which are part of the wheel wells, are a little warped and were not sliding in to place. With a little jimmying they slide over and the wings now fit like I expected.  I can now proceed.  Thanks again.
