updates (long with pics)
Posted by fightnjoe on Thursday, April 1, 2004 11:30 AM
i have posted many times telling of my current builds. i finally have pics to show. these are the progress pics i have so far.

first mine:

note that the color is wrong. this od is too dark. i am waiting to get to a hobby shop or to get the finances to send for the paints (and other things) the "plumbing" is 28 guage wire. i have to replace the canopy and the tires also.

this will end up being a f4f from vmf 211 approx. late 1941. the undercarriage is 5 pieces. this subconstruction took me 2 hours to get passible. i need to replace this canopy also.

this will be a 109 from the italian af. i am going to paint the white stripe and the white cross common to the italian a/c of ww2. i am going to leave it at that. it will be a center piece for a dio of german 109's being converted to italian.

these are of the f-15c that my 11 yr old son kevin is building. all the painting is his, he mixed the colors and used a toothpick.

this is the build of my oldest son matthew. i just wish i would have gotten a good shot of his cockpit. he did a great job on it.

hope you like them so far.

They're coming right along, fightinjoe !
Did you have some paint bleed under your masks? What did you use?
Hope you get the replacement canopies so you can continue !

cassibill and pix i hoped to be further along but reality has reared its ugly head. my boys are eager and i have to point out the little things but other than that they have done them all themselves.

pix i did have an enormous amount of bleeding. will not use the press and seal again. squadron lists canopies for each a/c. i hope they are compatable.

Looking good so far Joe. I think it's great that youv'e got your kids involved in modeling. I could never get my son interested, but he inherited his Grandfathers' love of woodworking. Keep us posted.

Fightinjoe;
Nice stuff! I'm at the paint stage on my F4F. The landing gear took me a while to get right also.

First, it's great to see the whole famdamly (almost) in on builds. They look really good and the paint bleed can be cleaned up pretty easily (back edge of a knife and careful scraping or touch-up paint).

The other is - you may not need to buy new OD for the apache (?) - If you have pastels or oil paint pigments, you can lighten it up with a mixture of white and yellow ochre brushed on the surface.

That press and seal didn't work Joe? That's a bummer!! Everyone's builds look fantastic, but I'm not envious of the sanding of the putty I see ahead for all of you!!! It's a shame you don't have a LHS to stop by and grab some RLM 76, and it's too bad we're not neighbors, 'cause I got a jar sitting right here. The toothpick stuck into the styrofoam, do you glue the ends to the planes? Or does it just rest on the point? Does it work really good??

Joe

Looks great! Don't be too concerned about the olive drab color being dark, it looks fine to me. I recently acquired some cowling panels for a UC-61 in their original OD over gray paint, and I was surprised at how dark both the green and the gray actually was.

Have you flown a Ford lately?

Good stuff. It's amazing that you model right along with your sons. Definitely a positive parent influence. Way to go!

Nice looking models. I too wouldn't be too concerned about the OD being too dark. Out of the shop, the OD would be dark and then fade within a few weeks in the sun. As was said, it would be easier to lighten by acrylic washes and pastels than repainting it, and may come out looking more authenic.

obiwan they are all revell kits. was very suprised with the detail in both the f-15 and the p-47. the cockpit detail is the best ive seen yet. the 109 is pretty good but i went and got a photo etch for the pit. turned out great. when i get the canopy cleaned up a bit i will get a shot of it.

kik the press and seal was horrible. the bleeding conformed to the points that the wrap adhered to the canopy. the toothpicks are not glued to the a/c, it rests on them. it is an attempt to find something that works better than the coat hanger method. it seems to work ok, have to be careful not to spray too heavy or sanding will be in my future where it rests on the toothpicks.

thanks ashley there is hope yet then. i want to highlight it a little with a pastel yellow just to get the yellow tint i see on some of the birds of pearl. but otherwise i decided last night to leave it as is and go forward.

zokissima thankyou for the biggest compliment of all. my father and i did not get along until just before his death. i determined and promised myself i would not let this happen with my children. my boys are excellent students when it comes to this hobby. they make a father proud. my daughters are waiting for me to get the items they want before they begin their hobby adventure. my oldest wants to do figurines, at 14 i think she will do a great job. my youngest, 5 yrs old, just wants to do something to be involved.

again thankyou all for the positive comments. the revell builds have been challenging at times but the end result looks like it will be good.
