P-38L tires
Posted by JohnnyK on Monday, October 15, 2018 6:45 PM

Hi,

I need help with the P-38L tires. Did the tires have any tread at all. I read somewhere that they were smooth. Makes no sense to me.

All different varieties of tires: smooth, block, diamond.  Pick what you want unless you have a specific one that you are doing with photo evidence.  Google P-38J/L etc.

WIP:  Monogram 1/72 B-26 (Snaptite) as 73rd BS B-26, 40-1408, torpedo bomber attempt on Ryujo

Monogram 1/72 B-26 (Snaptite) as 22nd BG B-26, 7-Mile Drome, New Guinea

Minicraft 1/72 B-24D as LB-30, AL-613, "Tough Boy", 28th Composite Group

Thanks for the reply. I think that I'm going to buy some diamond pattern resin tires/wheels.

Use what ever tires you want. The ONLY thing that was consistent is the size. Maintenance would use what they had available...

Nice. Diamond feels iconic for that plane, but as is discribed elsewhere, the tire selection was more about context (composition of airfield, available supplies, etc) than anything and wasn't specific to this or that varient.

Regardless, aftermarket wheels are one those small things you can do to level up the raw materials of a build in a hurry. When I was a kid, I thought it would be completely insane to pay perfectly good cash money to upgrade something as boring as the wheels, but they live in the shadow of what injection molding is good at, and it really can make a difference.

I agree 100% regarding the worth of aftermarket tires. They really increase the realisim of the finished model. I used resin tires and wheels on my P-51.
