Painting An F4F Wildcat
Posted by Zar on Friday, October 26, 2018 4:58 PM

Does anyone know of a rattle can color that is appropriate for a Guadalcanal era Wildcat? It's the 1/32 scale Trumpeter kit. I have yet to get in to airbrushing.   Thanks.

Blue Gray (not Intermediate Blue) over Light Gray. Model Master and many other paint lines make the appropriate colors.

I have never seen a blue gray Model Master rattle can which is why I asked. I guess I better look in to it.  Thanks!

I don’t know about Model Master doing those colors in rattle cans. Just for sure in bottles. You may have to try an eyeball match to one of the regular rattle can brands.

Even Tamiya does not make the color in their rattle cans.

Model Master US Navy Aggressor Grey is all right for the topsides. A light grey for the underside is pretty straightforward, Light Ghost Grey or something like that.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Not quite for the early War scheme. Aggressor Gray is too gray, and light Ghost Gray is too blue. Light Gull Gray is close enough for the Light Gray. But the topside Blue Gray, leans far more to the Blue.

Of course, but I can't really find better for the topside.

Yeah, the Blue Gray M 485 is a real beast to do. Intermediate Blue is out there, but a tad too dark and too gray.

Tamiya's AS-19 might be just the ticket. I know it says Intermediate Blue, but my first reaction when I used it was that it wasn't Intermediate Blue, but more of match for USN Blue Gray. I repainted with MM Intermediate Blue and went on my merry way.
