1/48 Revell PT-17 Stearman Full Build
Posted by Ranger_Chris61 on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 4:22 PM

Been waiting a little while to post this, but since the first full part is now out I feel comfortable posting this. So this is the first part in a series of videos I am doing on the Stearman that I built for this years contest. I had originally planned to release this monthly following the first full part, which I will post tomorrow, but because of the large time investment of editing all of the footage these will instead be coming out bi-monthly. So look forward to it.

OK so here is part 2, showing all the work done on the cockpit and internal area. Couple things to note. This was the first time I have done any large scale video project, so I openly admit the length has everything to do with my inexperience and lack of skill in edditing combined with this project being alot larger in scale and scope then I initialy though. As such treating this as a learning experience and will try to keep the length down in the next part. At the moment I am waiting to get some feedback on this one before I start edditing the next part to get an idea of where I need to improve and if I should split it into 2 parts.

Wow did not think it would be this long between posts on this project. In either case one big change from the last video is that I am cutting down the size of these videos, with the goal of keeping them between 30 and 45 minutes. This in turn will mean that the individual parts will be split up into multiple episodes.

Anyway this episode has us getting the fuselage together and getting some of the rigging work done.

good videos. Interesting that you rig before paint, I have never seen that before.

I did it this way for two reasons:

1) Doing it this ways allows for the rigging line to be run through the structure of the aircraft, in the same way as it would be on the real thing.

2) Looking at reference photos enough of them had their lines painted, as I am going to assume masking all those lines off to pain has to be an absolute pain to do, so I went with that on mine.

Thanks for posting, very informative.

I have the same kit, but the rigging has me apprehensive so I put it in the "to sell" stack. Might have to put it back in the "to build" stack after watching your videos!

So a week getting this posted but here is the next part in this build series. Picking up where we left off in the last video with more work on the rigging and doing a little scratch building.

It has been a very long time since I was able to get to do work on this video series but I am in the final push to getting it done. Here is the next part where we finish up the fuselage and paint this kit.

As a side note I also went through and updated the video links, as it looks like they had stopped working at some point.

Isn't that a great Kit? I have built two' and have another still in my stash.  Molding the cabane struts into the fuselage was genuis!  so easy to end with a perfectly horizontal wing.

I've heard so many great things about this kit.  I've got to get one.

Thanks,

John

Yeah, this is a great little kit. Built one a few years ago as my first biplane. I see them on sale for cheap at the local model swap meet all the time. May have to pick up and build another!

Nice work, RC61!

Thank you, believe it or not this was my first Biplane, and first time doing rigging.
