58th Fighter Squadron, WWII, P-38

Thanks, everyone. It was late last night, so I neglected the context of my request. I am working on an F-35 Lightning II right now and am interested in painting it in P-38 colors. I found one unit that flew P-38s and now flies F-35s, which is the 58th.

There may be another, but after spending hours researching the lineage of P-38 operators and cross-referencing the lineage of F-35 operators, I called it a night after I found the 58th. If I cant find an example of P-38 livery, I figure that I can borrow the scheme from another aircraft in the unit at the time.

I found a different site that has some decent details on the 58th FS, but no photos of P-38s that operated with this squadron. It does indicate the squadron operated the Lightning in the CBI theater in 44-45. It also includes a nice rendition of the squadron patch.

I did do my initial search on 58th Fighter Squadron but didn't notice the Fighter Group wording.

I'm not sure I fully understand your question are you asking if the 58th FS flew P-38s? If you are then yes they did. From a air force website.

I will counter the above (which I also saw) with a link from the Army Air Corps Museum web site.

This site indicates this squadron did not fly the P-38.

I'm not advocating for either site here, as I honestly don't know which particular aircraft that squadron operated.

 

I didn't do that deep of a search but I can't find a photo of a P-38 that says this is from the 58th FS. But if the official website of the United States Air Force says that the 58th FS flew P-38s then I believe that they did.

Aggie>  You're confusing a "group" with a "squadron".  :-)  The 58th FS was a member of the 33rd FG.

Sorry, I thought I might have a photo, but the P-38s were from a different Group, although in the Mediterranean.  I'll check to see if there's anything in one of the Osprey books.
