I've read that P-51's tended to have their wings puttied, sanded, and painted to hide the rivet dimples and help facilitate the "Laminar Flow" design of the wings.

I also understand that the repainting process in the field would often remove the putty and reveal the rivets.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

But....it's YOUR model.  Whichever way you jump....ENJOY!!!

I wouldn't get too excited about rivets on a Mustang, they aren't very apparent except in a few places, even on older airplanes liuke the Nevada Air Guard example below.  Just in a few places.

While rivets, especially flush rivets, are not very visible at normal model scales, other types of fasteners (like Dzus fasteners) are larger and more visible.  These are used on removable panels, like cowlings.  I don't bother with rivets, but do use a small dot of different paint to demark those.

No kidding, I just noticed that myself.  I was looking at some old black and white photographs of P-51 Mustangs and notice that I didnt see much rivets.  What I think I'm going to do is just mark out some of the bigger more noticeable screws.  (On the plus side big time saver )
