WW II Vehicles in 1/32 for Bomber Dio?
Posted by MattMcK. on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 8:21 AM

Hello All-

This is my first post here, so sorry in advance if it might belong somewhere else.  I recently ordered the giant 1/32 B-24 from HobbyBoss with the intention of a diorama based on an old photo I have of my grandfather (a doctor in the 8th Air Force) with the crew unloading a wounded gunner through the starboard gun port.

This will take up a lot of real estate and I'm looking for 1/32 vehicles, especially a jeep or ambulance to park on the tarmac.  There are plenty of figures I can convert, but I can't locate any 1/32 vehicles other than die cast toys.

Does anyone know of anything that might fit the bill?

Thanks!

Ole

I'm not sure you'll have much luck searching for 1/32 vehicles. 1/35 Scale is the standard for armor. Maybe not too far off really.

As Ole noted, 1/35 is pretty much the standard for armor kits, so there aren't very many.

Pyro made 1/32 car kits, some of which might work.  They turn up pretty frequently on eBay.

Monogram made 1/32 armor, but the soft-skinned vehicles, including a Jeep, were 1/35.  I don't know offhand if the difference would be too noticeable, or if you could pull it off with a 1/35 Jeep.  If you can, you could probably select a better kit.

And a die-cast model might work, too, just that it might require some additional detailing.  The old Forces of Valor line included a DDay Jeep, and those models weren't bad at all.  A quick search of eBay for "1/32 Jeep" turned up a number of die-cast models that would probably work, too.

Hope that helps!

Testor's makes a simple kit of a Jeep, too, which I did not know.  Here is one up for auction:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Testors-Jeep-Willys-Model-Kit-1-32-Scale/263981369624?epid=691279970&hash=item3d76840918:g:ARcAAOSw0NVbvAo2

I am not connected to that auction in any way.

Looks like it's a simple kit, with pre-assembled subassemblies.  But again, it could serve as a starting point for some super-detailing for your diorama.

Still poking around on this one...

I thought the deuce-and-a-half that Monogram issued was also 1/35, but I guess that was 1/32:

That one comes up on eBay, too, and that kit might work for you.

And Forces of Valor made a 1/32 Dodge WC 54 4x4 ambulance, too, which you may find on the second-hand market.

You can easily use any 1/35 armor vehicle kit with a 1/32 scale aircraft dio.  They are so close in scale, your eyes will never know the difference.  Therefore, you have a lot of subjects to choose from.  Good luck with your diorama!

Thanks to both for the help.  I'll check out the Forces of valor items.  I mostly build 1/35 and it's off just enough to annoy me.  I remember Academy 1/35 kits running big.  Maybe they have something.

Thanks to all! Lots of possibilities here. I’ve been thinking about doing this for going on forty years at this point. It’s a big build ans lots of figure conversions. Let’s hope I can maintain focus

Furthermore, by placing vehicles towards the rear of the scene, you have enhanced depth effect.

Background would be fine. Foreground- I sincerely have my doubts.

I agree, and since I want this to be view-able 360, I'd like to get it right.
