By coincidence, I have just started a book on the 15th Air Force.  "Forgotten Fifteenth" by Barrett Tillman.  No photos of the 96th in the book, but it does give an overview of operations.

If you can't find anything else, you might try e-mailing the people at this site dedicated to the 2nd Bomb Group.  They might be able to help.

Nice site to browse too!

Well, now getting that nose art is gonna be a trick. You'll have to get lucky and find a pic. I did find another shot of the sister plane shot up on the deck and the paint scheme is pretty clear. https://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/8091992101

You can see the wing stripes and in the pic of the widget you can make those out on the leading edge also. The tail appears to have a differernt shape under the call numbers. It may look like this one...https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-2nd-bomb-group-15th-air-foce-49th-20th-96th-429th-squadrons-b-17s-70026449.html

The sister bird appears painted and the other one I noted above appears BMF, but its hard to tell with these old B&W pics.

In the first sister pic I sent it is linked to  San Diego Air and Space Museum Archive. You may be able to ask them for some help. They may have something.

This pic shows a better image of the "T" shape on the tail with a similar wing scheme like the sister bird.

Good luck in your search.

Looking For B17G Markings
Posted by HeavyArty on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 1:10 PM

My wife's grandfather was a ball turret gunner on B17G "Big Widget" (42-38069) assigned to the 96th Bomber Squadron, 2nd Bomber Group, 15th Air Force. The aircraft was shot down over Hungary in Aug '44. I am looking for more info on markings. I have only been able to find the below, fuzzy picture of it that only shows partial markings.

Can anyone help out with more complete markings? I still have no clue if it had/what the nose art looked like.

More info on the aircraft can be found here.

This is a sister aircraft 42-38078 "Sweet Pea" also from 2 Bomb GRP, 15 AF (different Squadron though) with similar markings. I wonder how close the markings for "Big Widget" would be?
