F-14D Paint Question for VF-213 CAG
Posted by Scale_Model_Dad on Monday, July 1, 2019 11:32 AM

Hello Fellow Modelers,

I'm starting prep work for my next project, the 1:48 Tamiya F-14D. I really love the look of the Black Lions CAG bird, but I'm not sure which color to use for the fuselage. If I'm reading the instructions right it's Light Gull Grey, but that looks far to dark.

Here's a sample image I found on the web.

Black Lions CAG

Looks more cream colored to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

I normally use Tamiya acrylics with an airbrush, so recommendations in that paint line would be appreciated.

Thanks!

SMD

It is light gull grey. I'm not sure what Tamiya paint number it is, though.

Thank you! According to paint4models that's... XF-55 or Deck Tan. That looks right to me based on the photos and the paint color. Thanks again!

Tamiya does not make a straight up exact match for FS 36440 Flat Light Gull Gray. It can be mixed from their paints. According to IPMS Stockholm, the mix ratio is 1 part XF-20 to 1 part XF-2. Deck Tan XF-55, has way too much tan in the color and is not a good choice.

But pretty much every other paint company does make the color in enamel and acrylic.

Update:

I did some digging, and I found a post in another forum with a mix for Light Gull Grey made from Tamiya paints. When I saw the sample images, it looked spot on.

The mix is:

2 Parts XF-2 (Flat White)

2 Parts XF-19 (Sky Grey)

1 Parts XF-57 (Buff)

2 Parts XF-80 (Royal Light Grey)
