2 layers of oils applied to the top wings, one black followed by brown

Tops with and bottoms without to show the contrast

They will get some more after the decals have been placed and cleared over

That varnished plywood effect looks great!  Well worth the trouble.  I can't wait to see them come together.

Clear coated the wood and let it cure for a couple of days, now adding the artist oils

Seems Ive been a bit slack this past week or so with browsing. They came up well! The decals look a bit fiddly but you made a superb job.

Thanks Josh! I finally finished getting the wood decals on, lots of #11 blades and setting solution later. The trickiest part of the process is timing the trimming, wait too long and the decals are bonded too tight to seperate, too soon and even the sharpest blade will pull them out of shape before it cuts.

Nicely done! I've been waiting to see how you approached the colour modulation. This whole idea of painting wear and light is magnificent. Its one thing to paint a colour but to make it appear faded or accentuate highs or lows, as you have achieved both here, is very clever.

Thanks for sharing!

Finished the underside color modulation ,first with some oils then a filter of blue thinned with clear

Then coated it with Mr Color Super Clear

Josh_the_painter

Im looking foward to learning from your shading of the ribs. Its coming along amazingly well. Exhausts look perfect. That engine poking through looks convincingly real.

Im quite interested in the overall colour scheme. Do you have any history on the colours on the prototype?

Thanks Josh , the prototype was an all over natural wood finish , the Red tail according to the Wingnut Wings instructions is from Jasta 11  and the Green tail also of Jasta 11 but a later date, the green color could also have been red according to some.

I've sprayed a white base in prep for the wood grain, then sealed it all down with Mr color super clear. I also sealed the wings and tail feathers with the same clear.

Masked off the Rib stitching and started layering colors, later I will overspray everything with filters to tone down the contrast. Drilled out the exhaust and got them painted.

Thanks Josh found it on line , its made by Vertigominiatures. The hardware is sub par , I will be replacing it with better stuff. Looking like it may be more trouble than its worth , we shall see

Those PE pieces are great, I've learnt something today. And dont they make a huge difference to the overall effect. How hot do you get them to anneal? Just warming them or do they have to be quite hot?

Its looking great.

2 different Gun options come with the kit, molded one piece and the upgrade PE. Of course I went with the PE, first I drilled out the muzzles and managed to blow the side out of one. You can see in the picture one of the solid molded guns donated a new one

Next I annealed the cooling sleeves to make them easier to roll

The instructions called for a 2.5 mm bit to roll the sleeves, but they would'nt slide over the reciever, Checking against the solid molded ones this was too small its actually 2.8, not a huge deal to correct

Taking my time and using some medium ca the sleeves went on nicely

Adding the front plate and site finishes this up

Thanks Josh !  I really do like the Tamiya primer for light filling and cut it %50 with universal thinner,  it flows evenly and lays down nice and smooth.

I got some shop time in today and opened up the exit slot for the elevator control cables then shot some colors .

Moving along well I see. I've been using the Tamiya primer myself, fantastic product.

Might I add all your pieces in the background look just as interesting as the current build. Nice collection!

Thank You very much for taking the time to post up Josh , really appreciate it and the kind words. The rigging would have been easier had I pre-drilled the bulk heads under the seats, but it was'nt too hateful.

There is no end of detail going on there! The weathering on the engine looking particularly good. How difficult is the fitment of the rigging cables?

Fuse halves together and imperfections filled and sanded, rescribed the panel lines along the seam areas. Electric toothbrush is my go to tool for scrubbing sanding debris away from the panel lines and recessed details

Mike thanks, appreciate the kind words and looking forward to seeing your build! I'm honored that you think my build is worthy for reference!

I gave a light spray of dullcote to the insides trying my best not to hit the guage faces, and I did. Quick drop of superclear brought them around tho! Got the rigging cables for the ailerons routed , now fitting the fuse sides together.
