Hi,

Is there a 1:72 kit of a Ki-61?

Aoshima, Dragon, Hasegawa, RS, Tamiya. Likely others.

King of the heap is Tamiya’s, followed by Fine Molds.  Tamiya’s kit is the newest, and I believe was based on direct research on the Ki-61 that was recently restored by Kawasaki in Japan.  IMHO that’s the one to get.

But the Tamiya kit is just one version.  If you want a different mark, Fine Molds and RS should have it.

Thank you to you both.

Marks?  There were different marks?

Oh ya.  Short nose, long nose, razorback, fast back, etc.  And don’t forget the radial engined Ki-100, which also had razorback and fastback marks.  I can’t rattle off their designations though; I come up empty handed here.  Others will know more.

Ah, OK.

Thank you.  I guess I'm looking for the long nosed variant and the razorback one  (I guess) ... the one which resembled a Bf-109 (and I know the Ki-61s were not).

Yow, just looked it up on HLJ and as MJames70 noted there's a boatload of kits!

As Real G stated the Tamiya kit is probably least trouble to build but the FineMolds kit he posted above should be pretty easy too. Probably the RS kits would be the most work.

The Hasegawa kit is nice, but very basic. However there is a good selection of aftermarket resin and PE available. You can even model it with the ammo access panels open, using the resin aftermarket upgrades.

I have the Fine Molds short nose Ki-61-I and it is a decent kit.  You just have to watch the fit of the wing/fuselage and it's all good.

I THINK the Ki-61-II is the long nose variant (due to an uprated engine).  And the razorback Ki-100 with the radial engine is based off that.  The Ki-61-III is the fastback version I think.
