Mig 21 pit color question for red 4326
Posted by plasticjunkie on Friday, January 17, 2020 12:14 PM

I was reading that the pit color change over from grey to the funky blue green started sometime in 1966 for the Mig 21. I have been trying to see what color NVAF red 4326 has, Eduard is listing grey as the color including the pe set. This particular aircraft was sent to Nam in 1966 so it's very possible it was an early example having the grey pit color? I have seen online builds with pits having either colors, so which one is correct?

I've spent far too much time researching Soviet colors and my reference site does not mention the Mig21, but here is a link to the same discussion on another forum. It may point you in the correct direction. It made sense to me after reading most of the posts.

Hey thanks BK! That is one great thread pointing to the grey scheme for my silver NVAF Mig.

The real question is "what color would YOU like to see in there?  I am currently building Revell's Mi-24 Hind attack chopper, and the instructions call for dark grey interior, but research shows it could be the blue green as well....

I felt that my chopper would look better with that little flash of color, so I decided to go with the blue green....

Regardless, I am certain you are gonna mock it out of the park!

Thanks for your input Justin. There is a huge difference in the colors used depending on the time frame. I try to stay true as possible to the actual subject I'm modeling so I want to go with the proper pit color. The thread that BK posted mentions NM or silver painted ones had the grey color and once any upgrades were done the pit colors were done in the blue green shade. I suspect red 4326 was grey during most if not all of the Nam air war and may had a color change in the later years.

Then there is the question of was the Mig NMF or painted silver as a preservative? Again being SEA it was probably sprayed for moisture protection.

Definitely not the turquoise color for Vietnam era Migs.

I felt pretty strong about the grey so thanks for your input. What would you go with for the exterior finish, silver paint or NMF?

I was reading that after 66, some or most that received repairs or avionics upgrades got the phychodelic pit color treatment.

IF MY MEMMORY SERVES ME CORRECTly the USAF museum has a Mig 21 and maybe they have pictures on their web site. Also there is a museum just off the Akron Canton airport in Ohio that has a Mig 21 and mayber they would help.

PJ,

Here is a pic of the MiG-21 in Dayton:

Unfortunately, I can't find any pictures of the cockpit. Me and a friend are planning a trip in the next month, probably too late for you, but, I'll see if I can get some pics of the cockpit.

There is a MiG 21 near me at McClellan AFB, Aerospace Museum of California is the proper name.  I've seen the cockpit and recall it being turqouise.  Here is a link to some external photos I took.

The museum placard for the airplane is included and gives it history as a Czech S-107.  MiG 21 F-13 is the Russian designation.

Great pictures guys, thanks. Bruce's 21 looks like NMF and John's look to be  painted silver.
