Scratchbuilding AWACS dish (?!?)
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 9, 2004 5:58 PM
OK, so I got the 1/72 Hasegawa kit yesterday,a nd all looks good. Except for the flash around the prop, but that is really not that big of a detail. Here is my question for all of you scratch-builder gurus out there. I would like to convert this to having a AWACS dish on top, but for the life of me, I cannot thnk of anything to use as the dish, and how I will go about building the support frame. I have NEVER scratch-built anything, and any suggestions anyone has are greatly appreciated.

Thank you all, hope the weekend is great for one and all!

I just realised that I did not say what type of aircraft this is. P-3 Orion trying to convert from Naval, to Customs aircraft. Sorry for the confusion...

I dont understand what you are trying to build...

The P3 orion dosent carrey the AWACS dish. only the 707 aka AWACS...

Are you confusing (somehow, on alongshot) with the Hawkeye?
Maybe you can post photos of what you want or send us to a link.

If you really want a dish in 1:72 scale and dont want to scratch build you can get the awacs heller kit.

O.K. my bad...
I googled it and found this:
http://www.topedge.com/panels/aircraft/sites/kopack/p3-6.html

From this picture I dont think you need an AWACS dish, but you will need the hawkeye dish.
Hasegawa nad Fujimi realesed the Hawkeye kit in 1:72 somewhere around the 80's maybe you should look for these kits at ebay and so on...
These kits offcourse includes the mounting as well

There is another thread just titled P-3 Orion. If you put that title into the search field, you can pull up one of the responses with a pic of an Orion with an AWACS dish. Also, there are some links listed as well which have some more great shots. I would just post the photos, but I have not figured it out yet, and it is early with no coffee...:-) Thanks again everyone for your help, I appreciate it!

Here's a thought...could you carve the housing (the dish is really contained in the housing...it's there for aerodynamic drag) out of a stryofoam block, seal that, paint and glue it on? That why it would be really easy to cut and sand out the complex curves..sealing it into to a smooth/flat surface might be a challenge though. For the struts, you can glue some strips of styrene together for thickness/width and then trim it down. Either way, you will need som really good reference pictures.

That is a great Idea, I had been thinking about working the dish to be hollow, but the styrene just makes more sense. I think I may go with that, and move forward. I have not actually started building yet, I just stare att he open box thinking "what have I gotten myself into?", but I will try to post photos as progress is made.

Hi Mbolz,
Get the Fujimi kit, it will make your life so much easier. Any version Fujimi did will work for you, so search Ebay for an old release, like an E-2A. Also this was released in the US by Testors and these always fall through the Ebay cracks, just ought one for $6. Heller also just rereleased this with French markings. Good luck.
