In TO 1-1-4 it says when referring to the size of the insignia it is the the diameter of the star, in other words a circle that touches the five points of the star.

How do you measure or scale down US WW2 Star & Bar?

National insignia on us ww2 aircraft, the late war 'star and bar'  are generally referred to in size such as a 40" or a 55"; however, It does not seem to me that this refers to the total width of the insignia (i.e. the width of the bar). Is it the width of the circle? the star? My scaled down measurements seem to indicate the star, but who knows if the decals I am basing my analysis on are actually correctly scaled?

Any hep would be appreciated. I swear I knew this at some point. I feel like that indian chief in 'The Rebel Josie Wales' -- "I used to know all these things before I became civilized"...
