1/72 Hobby Boss P-61B "Sleepy Time Gal II"

This is one of Hobby Boss's "Easy Assembly" kits. More basic than a standard kit, but it still needed some filling, sanding and re-scribing. I experimented with an Ak Aluminium weathering pencil on it, the pencil is quite soft, so it makes it hard to make an impact with the colour, and to my eyes it doesn't seem as "natural" look chipping like a piece of sponge and paint technique. But the sponge would be a bit hard to get along panel lines in this scale I think.

I used Mission Models interior green for internals and wheel bays, Tamiya Nato black for the paint job with some grey added to lightly change shades randomly. Flory Grey wash on it as it is black and dark dirt would not really show. Vallejo matte varnish to finish it off.

The nose art decal can hardly be seen, (lady sitting on a crescent moon), not sure why, as it seemed nice on the decal sheet, plenty of colour, I thought it would show up well. Not as easy as I thought it would be to build, but I do like the Black Widow, great looking aircraft and I'm not sure if anyone else does one in 1/72.

Very nice! You really nailed the weathering, which is not easy on an all black night fighter.

I don't know much about the P-61, never realized how big the stabilizer is, almost like a second wing.

Interesting to see rocket tubes, didn't know it was used in ground attack.

Great build, nice pictures, thanks for posting!

Good looking little model. It's a shame about the nose art.

A funny story that is sort of related. My F-in-Law was a crew chief in the MTO in the 414 and owned one. His girlfriend, later my wife's mother, was a brunette. He had a picture of her reclining in one of those old fashioned bathing suits from the '40s that men would make a pass at on the hanger.

When she was painted on the nose, her dark hair made her look bald, so the artist made her a blonde!

There've been any number of 1/72 widows over the years. I think Airfix re released their 50 year old kit recently. A very nice one was released several years ago by Dragon/ DML. I've got two in the stash.

The aircraft wasn't in service for very long- mid 1944 to 1947. By 1945 there wasn't much in the sky left to shoot down. They were used quite a bit as fighter bombers.

I've got a LOT of photos of them. An interesting weathering feature of the black ones, at least in the MTO was that they had all of their open spaces between the movable control surfaces and the airframe taped up for the trip over on a ships deck.

When the tape was removed, it took a lot of black paint with it.

Fabulous aircraft, really nice model Grant.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Grant, I think the wear and tear is just right.  It can easily be overdone on an all black fuselage.

God, Family, Models...

At the plate: 1/48 Airfix Bf109 & 1/35 Tamiya Famo

On deck: Who knows!
