I've got 28 Hase F-14 kits in storage back stateside.  Might have a fire sale when I get back.   I've got so many decals for the Hase kits, and I'm not sure how well some of the large tail decals (think VF-111 sunburst) will fit on the Tamiya kit.

they need some whipping your get into shape but eventually they look good once done. I will build the ones I have but any future Tomcats will be Tamiya. I have 2 Hobby Boss ones in the stash and look very yummy but don't know about ease of build with them.

NO freaking way! I have built several Hasegawa Tomcats and no way are they even close in fit and details to the Tamiya kitty.  I love those Tamiya cats.

Not the CAG bird, its the squadron CO's bird. It was called "The Tomato", and like you mentioned, it was not  popular scheme with any of the flight crews, from the CO on down.

Fightertown Decals did that bird on 48-021, but I never picked it up.

Sad ending, that bird crashed in 2002 during a cat shot, with the loss of the pilot.

 

yep the squadron CO not the CAG. Don't know why I did that duh!

I have the decals for tomato also. Didn't know about the deadly ending there.

Tomato looks great, an unusual CAG paint scheme indeed but I think it was re painted a month later due to complaints from squadron pilots So the paint would have stayed pretty fresh. No big deal about the port star, another one can go right over it to correct it.

You beat me to a question I was going to ask over in my F4 thread. I guess I'll ask it here first.

I found a paint chart Stik posted a few years ago, the FS specs call for Light Gull grey over US Navy Insignia white, both gloss.

You mentioned you finished your Tomcat with a semi-gloss. Is that pretty typical for the era? I'm so used to laying down a dull matte on my WWII aircraft, I'm just not sure. Full gloss sort of scares me, afraid it would look toy-like. I think I like the semi-gloss idea, even though my paint guide calls for gloss.

Not the first time that the national insignia has been painted upside-down on an actual VF-101 aircraft.

Its a nice kit to build.The kit markings are either two tone or camo schemes so painting will be a little more of a challenge with those but it really fits together nice typical Tamiya to the next level.

That's a beauty!  Quite the striking livery - I've never seen those markings before.  Ordanance looks very sharp.  Nicley done.

Nice clean aircraft.  I agree the red does make an impressive finish.  I‘m Going to build this one soon.  Any challanges with the kit I should be aware of?

Almost two years of no building when I moved,now with the lockdown,got so much time on my hands.Still shaky with my build logs,maybe some armor is more my comfort zone.

Oh the color is Modelmaster Enamel Gloss Gull Gray 16440,I knocked the gloss down a little with Vallejo Satin

I remember seeing that sheet. I have a Missouri Air Guard F-15  marked with a St Louis Cardinals 2006 WS champion scheme. I enjoy having it in the collection. Look forward to seeing yours!
