YOUR favorite ME/BF109 in 1/48th scale...
Posted by Justinryan215 on Friday, May 1, 2020 9:10 AM

So, I am inspired to start my pinewood derby car for next year's Cubscout derby, and it has a 109 as its main element.  I am excited to get started on this build, and while starting the planning phase, I realize I have never build a 109!  So, naturally, I want to build one while I build my 109 derby car.  My problem is, there are so many to choose from!  I am leaning towards a Tamiya offering (a little more than I am looking to spend, but a have a few rewards bucks from megahobby, so that makes it easier in my mind...)

I'm sure this has been beaten to death, but lets have a discussion!Big Smile

Tamiya/Airfix if your looking for a quick easy project that builds into a really nice final product.  Tamiya would probably be my favorite.

Eduard if looking for excellent detail and accuracy.

Academy are older Hobby Craft reboxes.  They're relatively nice too and offer some variants not found with other manufacturers.

Yeah that is a quandary. So many choices out there. There are high end, and bargain priced. To the above suggestions, I’d also Airfix, who have done some new tool Emil’s recently, and their old Friedrich is not half bad either. Revell did a nice G-10 that has aged well. The old Otaki/Arii G-6 that has been reboxed by AMT and Airfix is decent if you can find it not overpriced. Eduard has been doing a beautiful family of 109s. Hasegawa has a very good line up too. Fujimi offers a few versions that are certainly worth a look, although it’s a good idea to shop around price wise on these. ICM and Zvezda also offer some new tool kits that should also be up for consideration. Hobbyboss recently tooled some “Easy Build” 109s, But I’ve never seen one opened, let alone built, so I can’t say anything one way or the other...

So, long story short, depending upon the version, if you want a high end kit and money is no object, I recommend Tamiya or Eduard. Eduard Profipack or Masterclass if you want all the goodies in one box. For a bargain kit, go Airfix, Revell, Eduard Weekend Edition, or Hobbycraft.

There are just too many variables for 1/48 109s to say “get THIS kit!”

I would recommend an Eduard kit. In fact, if I had to pick just one, I'd recommend the Eduard Bf 109F-4 Profipack (it's my favorite). I think the F-4 looks the best of all 109s - wonderfully clean lines without the boxiness of the Emil and without the bulges and bumps of the Gustav. The kit has excellent detail, is a straightforward build, offers a fantastic choice of schemes and has much better decals than Tamiya. Megahobby has it in stock. My 2 cents.

you see...I'm leaning towards a G- kit, as I like the knobby bulges and bumps on those! lol

I've gone through Megahobby's inventory and added all of the 109's to a wishlist to sort of compile them all in one place....

Thanks for this!

I do have the Revell G-10 in my stash, but I was thinking of using that one for my pinewood derby car idea.  I figure it was cheap enough to cut up...woulding want to hack up a Tamiya or Eduard Profipack for a silly little derby car....

This is the Eduard G-4 Profipack kit. It was a great kit eventhough some of the photoetch is a bit fiddly to work with.

I've heard some of the Zvezda 109 kits are nice, especially their Bf109 F2
