Arkansas Air Guard Viper in 48th
Posted by mississippivol on Friday, June 5, 2020 7:41 PM

Well, here's no. 8 for the year. It's the Tamiya F-16C Block 32 Viper of the 188FW based at Fort Smith. Pleasant building kit, lots of detail and great fit. Got in a funk to finish at the end, so some things went undone. It pairs well with the Monogram F-4C that these Vipers replaced. Had a Hun from this squadron, but a young un destroyed it in a sneak attack. I need to do that one again, and I also have an A-10 in the stash. Lots of military air flying around the Natural State!

They both look great!  I have these as well and other planned Ark Air Guard aircraft, but just haven't gotten around to building any yet!    Sadly, my neighbor to the east continues to build more Arkansas subjects than I ever even start!

Very nice.  I haven't done a tamiya falcon, I've done a couple hasegawa and have another in the stash. Great job.  Man you are cranking out the builds!

Thanks,

John

First time I've seen a Arkansas electric jet, pretty good.  You could do a entire series starting with the B-57with the bubble canopy, F-84F/RF84, F-100, F-101B, and RF-101C.  With the exception of the 100, these were based at Little Rock.

GO HOGS!!!! Seweee! Very nice 16! I really like those decals. May I ask where you got them? Or, are they kit decals?

Thanks, y'all! I didn't realize the number of types flown out of Little Rock, that would make quite a collection. I built a Minicraft C-130 with Little Rock markings I got as a gift, and a B-52G, "Miss Piggy" from Blytheville. If I'm not careful, I'm going to have a full shelf of Arkansas a/c!

They came with the kit; only reason to buy it!

Nice work. I served in the Arkansas ANG after leaving active duty. I was in the 189th Security Police Squadron at LRAFB which is where I served the majority of my active duty in the 308th SMW.

That is a cool looking F-16, and I love the F-4.

They also flew the B-57B.  Microscale has a decal sheet for a pretty neat paint jobs on those.  They flew P=51s after the war, F-84 straight wings in Korea, and RF-80s as well.  There are a few elusive photos of a A/B-26 invader that they had before they moved to Little Rock AFB.    Yes, long researched and long planned builds, but have I built any at all?  Not quite, but I think that I have purchased most in 1/72nd scale, before deciding to go with 1/48th scale.

Put me down for really liking the red tail too.  Nice clean build.  Looking forward to getting mine started.

I understood that there were also B-57s at Blytheville before it went to SAC. Are those the same guys?

No, the B-57s at Blytheville were regular Air Force, TAC. (461st TBS I think).   They were the first unit to go to Blytheville when the base was reactivated after WWII.   The Arkansas Air National Guard in Little Rock was a tactical reconnaissance wing until they switched to KC-135s in the 70s.   They flew the bubble top RB-57a and later the B-57b.  It was a recon configuration as well.     There is also an ANG unit in Fort Smith.  The F-4 and F-16 you built are from that unit.   They flew A-10s until a couple of years ago.  Now they are drone operators but I'm not sure if there are actually any aircraft at that base now.  Before the F-4  they flew F-100s (camo with a Razorback on the nose)   i think they flew F-80s and RF-80s as well.
