Ohh I really love the tail. You can still pick up shadows of the preshading. Really well done!
In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!
Nice work on the o/d not covering up the preshading , looking real good ..
Nick.
Very nicely done. You don't see many early redtails. I love it. Excellent work.

Another one lands on the shelf. This time an old Revell P-47D Razorback Thunderbolt. The build portrays a fictional 332 Fighter Group P-47 at Ramitelli, Italy, 1944. I really enjoyed this build. The Thunderbolt has always been a favorite of mine since I was a kid and so have the Tuskegee Airmen. The build was pretty much OOB, except for the wing guns. The paint is mostly MM enamels: Insignia Yellow for the wing stripes; O.D. and Neutral Grey for the camouflage. The red tail and red cowling ring is Tamiya XF-7 Red. The national insignia are from an Academy P-47N kit. The nose art is from a Red Tails Mustang decal set. The aircraft number is from Techmod. The aircraft number, 43, is a nod to Bubba Wallace and Richard Petty Motorsports. The wing guns are fashioned from aluminum tubing. Now this Thunderbolt is all bombed up and ready for its ground support mission.
OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...
After a lot of work, I was finally able to log in. Now, a short update on the Red Tail Thunderbolt: I painted the Insignia Yellow stripes on the wings and trim tabs on the tail surfaces. Later this week I'll start the camouflage and after that I'll paint the red tail.
TheMongoose Looking forward to some color. Nice to learn a little history on this one as well. I only had the movie version knowledge previously and didn't know about the other aircraft.

Yeah, Mongoose, the Red Tails got most of their time in the Merlin P-40F/L and of course the Mustang. They did fly P-39s and Thunderbolts too, but just for a short period.
The Red Tail Thunderbolt is primered and pre-shaded. I'll paint the grey underside in a day or two. This old Revell kit isn't so bad. Yes it has raised panel lines but the detail is good. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the shelf soon.
Yeah, Stik, I think they flew Thunderbolts for only a few weeks before they received their Mustangs. Probably the same for the P-39. I built the old Hawk kit as a Razorback many years ago. I have a couple of old AMT P-40F kits that I will build eventually with some aftermarket decals as Red Tails.
Yes, they flew the P-40 and P-51 the longest, so those are the most modeled. I want to say that the old Testors boxing of the Hawk P-47D, which could be built as a Razorback or Bubbletop came with decal option for a Tuskegee aircraft. IIRC, it was for one of those that claimed a German destroyer sunk by strafing.
F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!
U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!
N is for NO SURVIVORS...

This is a kit I thought I'd never build. It's an old Monogram/Revell P-47D Thunderbolt kit that came packaged in a dual kit box with the old Monogram Do-335 model from eons ago. It seems that the early Red Tail aircraft are under represented so I opted to use this kit to depict one of their Thunderbolts. The Red Tails flew the P-39, the P-40, and the P-47 before they took delivery of their Mustangs. I've already closed up the fuselage and polished the seams on it and the wings and inserted the pilot. I'm looking forward to this being a simple fun build of an important airplane.
