Douglas Skyraider - 1970s

I think the kit in question is a Revell skyraider in 1/40th scale with lots of moving parts. You can check e-bay and there is a site that sells old kits.

Yeah, appears to be the Revell 1/40 kit fro mthe description.

Appears to be a 1994 rebox, so you probably don't have to scour vintage kit sites.

Or, Trumpy has a 1/32 kit for which there are a ton of accessories.

Going to 1/48 you can build nearly every variant of the Able Dog/Sandy a person would care to (the ASW and ECW variants are a genre to themselves).

In my earlier modeling phase, this kit was a bridge too far. I couldn't afford it at $ 5.00 or so. It's not an aircraft I had much interest in then, although I do now.

I'll look up what Thomas Graham had to say about it, but the scale is weird.

To the OP- I'd carry the thought and buy a more modern kit. Probably cost about the same.

Sometimes it's fun to build these 'toy' kits.  It's like comfort food. Not really good food, but makes you feel good.  Building these makes you feel good.

A while back, I build the Monogram F6F and Zero, both with the retracting landing gear, and the Hellcat has folding wings. I built them out of the box, just like the instructions said, only using aftermarket decals and modern finishing techniques. It was a lot of fun. 

 Looking at those instructions, you have to appreciate the engineering that went into the working parts on the Skyraider. The gears on the landing gear and the way they made the dive brake work. It's interesting mechanism.

That Skyraider is a nice kit. My favorite "toy" kit is Revells 1/48th F-102. When you close the canopy the landing gear fold up. Monogram's visible Mustang in 1/32 scale is also a good one. 

I'm just finishing the Monogram Corsair in a recent boxing with my grandson.  We are just about done, but today I tried to fold up the wheels, and found the wheels are too large to go into the wells.  It has a new cockpit too, but the end result is a bit odd.  If they were going to change things I wish they would have changed the canopy, it's really awkward.

I have 3 of the old F-102's, one is still in the box with all the packing and dividers and all the ground equipment.  I tried to build one and it sure didn't go like the one I built as an 11 year old.  Lots of shrinkage, and the cockpit area is more like 1/72 scale.  I still love it, or the memory of it, I guess.

I have good memories of that Skyraider, too.  And one in the stash.
