WOT, no free decal sheet?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 3:05 AM
I visited the newsagent yesterday.
I used to get my FSM from them until I decided to go subscription last year.
Last week the May 04 issue arrived - my newsagent only just got his copy of the April copy.
I was feeling good - until I saw the cover.
Taped to his copy of the April issue was a set of RAF decals - decals that were missing from the copy sent to me in the mail.
Is this punishment for going subscription?
If so I am willing terminate mine , there are many mags out there that actually look after their subscription readership rather than penalising them!Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]

oggy,
I do not think FSM "tapes" anything to it's magazines for either us subscribers or those sold at newstands. I did not receive any decals and every copy at the Hobby shop, and bookstores do not have them either. I think you are the victom of a cruel hoax!
If and when FSM sends you a freebie, the magazine will be in a plastic bag, and if that is opened I would confront the mail carrier!
Perhaps the newstand fellow just wanted a loyal customer back?

Don
I know it's only rock and roll, but I like it.

actually, i swa the mag that oggy is talking about at the newstand. It came wrapped in a plastic see through bag and there were a set of decals included. The cover even trumpets the fact stating: here are your free decals" or words to that effect.
It wasn't a cruel hoax.
if it's still there at the weekend, I'll get it and scan it.

though i wouldn't hold my breath........

I know this has happend before as well. My dad doesn't subscribe anymore but I do... several months ago he got some sample Microbrushes in his store bought copy and I didn't get any in my subscription copy. I figured it was to get modelers to pick up a copy and peak their interest so that they would subscribe... doesn't make me want the freebies any less though.

Well, it must be an Irish thing.
I picked up my issue at my LHS and no decals. I also saw the same issue at a local news stand, Books-a-Million, Hasting's and Waldenbooks and none of them were in a plastic bag with anything free!!!!

I think it's the hobbyshp's promo. I believe Hobbytown USA started the microbrushes thing because I saw those copies with freebies only in their shops but nowhere else, including my subscription. Owell. I'd rather pay the $25 (compared to the normal $40 or sumthin) subscription than get those lil brushes.

hey uileann,
Dhia duit comes first. Dhia is Mhuire dhuit is the reply. I think. Been a while. As for the decals, well, the shop in question is a book/magazine store, not a LHS. Only way those decals get supplied is from the supplier, eg, FSM.

Slan go foil, guys. Agus go ndeiri an bothar leat.

I subscribe to FineScale Modeler. I have received the May issue. I didn't get any free decal sheet. Mine wasn't wrapped in plastic, and it was even torn a little on the spine.
I don't really care. I have a relatively limited modeling scope, so the chances of me getting exactly what I need for free are pretty slim.

I buy mie from a local news stand and there were no Decals attached. Mind you when the micro brushs were included a few months back I had to search through the copies to find one that the brushes weren't removed from.

I pre-order my copy from a large news agent in our nearest town ( in the UK ).
March and April editions came in a plastic bag with free decals, March had some for the BAe Hawk and April has some RAF markings.
I also got the micro brushes a few months ago Smile [:)]

What, some of you guys are getting decals two months in a row!!!! What a rip-off!!! You know, they do the same thing with the Playstation magazine I subscribe to, if you buy at the newstand, you get a demo disc, but the subscribers don't get a damn thing but some ripped copies the stoned mailman gives you. Makes me think twice about subscribing in the future. Especially when I get my mags sometimes weeks behind the newstands anyway!!!! BTW, I didn't get any microrushes either.

I've just started my subscription and ordered some back issues. One of the issues from late last year (October or November) came with the microbrushes. All the back issues I ordered came in a plastic bag.

This was discussed on Hyperscale, it seems that in the UK mag came out with Red Arrow markings to go along with the review of the Airfix Hawk. We didn't get any free decals in New Zealand either...

Bought the last few copies at WHSmith here in the Uk, and each time got my freebies.

If memory serves me this is all to do with the postage rate that magazine distributors get changed by postal services. The basic postage rate for magazines does not include provision for any other 'stuff', just the basic magazine.

Added to which the freebies are there to attract people to the magazine in the news agents, and thus attract new customers. You don't need to do that when they've already paid a year in advance!

By the way if anyone wants the Hawk decals, I'm more than happy to send them on, as modern jets are no my bag.

yes, those decal sheets really push up that price of postage!
Between this and the fact that we (overseas readers) are excluded from the sweepstakes makes me feel that we suffer from the 'take the money and run' syndrome.

I think that the decals were probably something that FSM tried to attract new readers. They probably figure that subscribers don't really need them. I don't really mind. I'm not going to get all upset about it.

We don't get any goodies with our FSMs here in Japan, either.
Geez, you'd think we'd get SOMETHING for the 1,900 yen ($18 USD) cover price they charge here!!

No worries, I have a subscription back in the States, and dear ol' Mom just sends 'em over every coupla months or so.
Still, with no brushes OR decals! Nor are the magazines delivered in bags. Just a mailing label slapped on the cover.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not complaining. Honestly, I could care less about those gimmicks. I like the mag, and that's what I pay for.

The parties that should be complaining loudest are the manufacturers of the sample products that aren't making it into the hands of possible customers via these giveaways. I would have been buying Microbrushes years ago if I'd have had some samples! Tried 'em on a whim a coupla month's ago, and now I'm hooked.
