I am about to do my first NMF bird, a 1/48 P51D and would like to ask you bigger fish out there for some general advice on how to approach it.

One thing I know is to use a black primer. Everything else... Beats me.

NWhat product lines do you have available to you there in Serbia Nikola? AK? Alclad? Testors Metalizer? There are lots of options to choose from for your Mustang.

All that aside, before you even get to primer, a smooth finish in construction and any seam/gap filling is a must. Everything must be buffed smooth before the primer.

But also remember on a P-51D. The wings are painted silver not NM. Except for the gun covers and flaps/ailerons which are NM

      I get the pleasure of the build and the added pleasure of seeing the faces and emotions present of those I give them to. I don't have the space to keep them. Soo. I really enjoy it when someone says How did you do that?

 I don't know about where you live. Can you get Foil adhesive and Very Thin Household foil? That is one way. The Alclad Method is another and the last which I have used with some success in the product made for gilding picture Frames. It's a cream base and when fully engulfing the surface you just keep rubbing till you achieve the shine you want then seal it.

     The Alclad method has one drawback that is normal. Your work has to be flawless. Once you spray that Aluminum or Steel you are commited! I like Foil because I can get, panel by panel what I want. Yes, it's time consuming, but with the textures found in Household foi,l the finish is never the same!

     On the Alclad, don't forget, That Primer Must be a Very High Gloss finish!

      Have you ever seen a natural metal Workboat anywhere? Now this one is choice. I got a Commision from Clean Bay, Inc. for a model of a boat they purchased from Marco Marine in the Northwest.

       She was a brushed Aluminum finish. Well, I foiled the model with the dull side of Reynolds Cooking foil on the outside. This was the zinger though. I applied a layer of Very thin Foam Ribbon first.  Why? Well, the new boat already had some dents in her and I wanted them to show.

      This was my second last Commission for them. I think I built everything in their inventory. But that one has always stuck with me. 

All of thesemodels are finished in Bare Metal Foil.

JohnnyK, I love your BMF work. Definately something I need to try my hand at. It's truly difficult to improve upon foil for the look it gives.

There are some real works of art shown here, I stand in awe of them all.  My only attempt at NMF was earlier this year (1/48 P-51), but failed when the metallic paint kept lifting with the masking tape.  I will be trying again on a smaller scale (pun definitely intended), having researched the subject more thoroughly.  In the meantime, I continue to admire the skills of others - beautiful work, everybody.

I have used that stuff, but found it harder to use than Tamiya gloss black lacquer.  I now prefer the later.  In fact I have also used Testors gloss black enamel, gloss black auto paint with good results.  As long as you get a good gloss black finish, it seems to work great.  However, especially the polished aluminum Alclad shows up every tiny imperfection, so the finish must be flawless.

Tamiya does make a nice gloss black acrylic!hence this 57 Chevy body!

Yes. I think it is TS-14.
