Airfix 1/48 H.S. Hawk T.1
Posted by s.t.u.a.r.t on Monday, November 16, 2020 6:20 PM

Hi All,

I'm new to the boards (although I already know some of you Big Smile ), so I thought I'd share my latest finsh - completed yesterday in fact.

This is an Airfix 1/48 Hawk T.1 which was mainly freehand brush painted (I free-handed the demarcation lines) using Hataka Blue Line Acrylics and Aqua Gloss. The decals were taken from an Xtradecal set and depict a 1980's aircraft stationed with the Central Flying School at RAF Valley in Wales.

Built OOB, but I did add a PE set for the cockpit and seats.

It's a cracking little kit this if you ever get the chance to build it.

This is the actual aircraft I was going for.

Thanks for looking in. Comments always welcome.

Cheers!

lol! I could never get my head around an airbrush, I have two, but I just find them too much faff to use. That being said, I try to apply airbrush methods to my brush painting. You wouldn't use a spray gun to paint a model, so I don't see why the norm with brush painting is to use a 'big flat brush'. Airbrush sprays can be quite tight (depending on the size needle I would imagine), so I paint with a small (no.4) brush using small amounts of well thinned paint. Painting that way I've actually managed to get some good modulation of colour on some builds.

I also never paint in gloss or satin, only matt (adding clear coats later for gloss etc.) and I use natural haired soft bristle brushes  -  do those and you'll reduce the risk of getting brush strokes/marks which I hate.

No a brush will never be as good as an AB, but you can still get good finishes if you work at it.

Cheers!

No, this is one of their much older 1/48 kits - Pre-Hornby I think. I have however built both the new 1/72 T.1 and T.2 kits and they're very nice. I like Hawks, I've almost built as many of them as I have the 'aircraft that shall not be named'...

It's a nice little kit if you can find it - the only poor points are the IP's and the wing fit. It's worth noting that if you get the Red Arrows boxing it still has all the parts to build a normal T.1 or T.1A. The instruction sheet is different but I can always scan mine for you. I actually have another on the TO-DO pile, I'm planning an all over grey T.1A with Sidewinders.

That's a beautiful job, and a teriffic finish.  Before I started airbrushing I used to find a big problem with paint building up at the edges of the masking tape - do you have a tip for avoiding that?  It was one of the reasons I bought my first airbrush.

BTW I have a 1/72 Airfix Hawk lined up for an imminent GB, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?

mmmmm.... Edges can be tricky I agree. I don't think you can always get rid of them when painting with a brush, but using thinned paint, rubbing down between layers
and doing what I do and using a small brush will help. Of course I very rarely use masking tape as I hate the stuff - all the demarkations lines on this were done free hand.

I hope that helps.

Enjoy the 1/72 Hawk, those are great kits.

Cheers!
