Accurate Miniatures P-51A Mustang Operation Torch...
Posted by fotofrank on Thursday, November 19, 2020 9:12 AM

This is the fourth Mustang I've completed this year and the second Allison Mustang. I have a Tamiya P-51D on the bench and another AM P-51A still in the stash. This kit is built straight out of the box, I even used the kit decals. The paint is MM O.D. and Light Ghost Gray enamel. The yellow theater markings on the wings are Tamiya Flat Yellow and the spinner is Tamiya Flat Red. To give the airplane a real dusty desert look, the airframe is dusted with Tamiya Buff thinned 10 to 1, thinner to paint and built up slowly. The exhaust and gun streaks are black powder and I used some white powder to give the paint a little more fading. It is finished off with Testors Dullcote to seal the paint and decals.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Great job, Frank. YesBeerYesBeer

That's a beautiful finish, Frank!  I love your weathering!

Thank you for describing how you did that! The next thing I want to learn is how to tie the decals in with the weathered finish.  I've suspected if could be done with thinned color.  I can try this and experiment now.

Best regards,

Well done, Frank.  Is it just the photos or is the canopy a little frosted?

Beautiful job. Your weathering/chipping are nicely done. I’ve looked at that kit many times but could never pull the trigger and purchase. Any issues with fit?

Chemteacher, this is a great kit. If you can find the kit at a hobby show or swap meet, grab it. You won't be disappointed. AM has an entire series of P-51A kits, including the A-36 Apache and the F6B recon Mustang. Go for it.

Yeah, Jeaton, I don't know how it happened. Apparently the masking leaked. It might be dust or over spray on the inside of the canopy. Of course, I didn't discover that until I took the canopy paint mask off.

Nice! I built the Apache kit some time ago and man I miss AM kits.  Got an avenger in the stash.  I like the buff filter.  I've been experimenting a bit with mig filters. I put a desert tan filter (airbrushed) over a spitfire and an SEA camo and it has a nice effect. btw, I was looking at a P-40 operation torch bird and it had the flag on it as well.  Was that a theater/operation thing or just the era?  Haven't seen that elsewhere.

Thanks,

John

I've only seen the flag on MTO aircraft, Keavdog. And on the Boeing Clippers, but that's it.

Whenever I see one of those AM Mustang kits at a show or swap meet, I grab it. Kinda the same thing with the AMT P-40s, gotta have 'em. I like the sleek look with the Allison nose as opposed to the bulky Merlin nose. Still, a Mustang is a Mustang.
