Applying a wash ruined my paint finish.
Posted by Kawolski on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 10:11 PM

I'm getting back into modelling after a couple of decades.  I'm trying things I've never tried.  After painting with acrylics, I sealed my model with three coats of Pledge Revive It.  Then three more after applying my decals.  I used a wash made of soft pastels, distilled water, and a few drops of dish soap.  It all seemed good until I began to wipe the wash off with a damp paper towel.  The paint appeared cracked and immediatley began to wipe off.  Can anyone help?

My first thought says it was the soap. What sort of dish soap was in the wash? For it to cut through three layers of clearcoat and attack the paint itself is pretty strong stuff when activated.

Second thought is how long did you let the clearcoat dry before applying the wash and then attempting removal?

Lastly, what sort of paint did you use, brand and type?

Could you post photos of the mishap to illustrate what happened?

I think you used the wrong floor poish. Pledge Revive it is for wood floors and far as I know has little in common with the old "Future" that folks like to use on models.

I would suspect the Revive It product might be closer to a wax than a acrylic clear, which is what you want.

I used Dawn.  That was my second thought, actually.  First being that I had the wrong type of Pledge, even after researching it.

I let it set for @ 24 hrs.

For paint, I used Mission Models acrylics.

It won't let me upload a photo for some reason.

As I researched which to use, the Revive It kept showing up along with another called Pledge Floor Care in a different bottle.  It seems they keep changing the look, so who knows?

Uh Oh!

I hope your soap wasn't Dawn. That stuff cannot be used. Also in my experience Pledge Revive is not what you ever want to use.

Yep.  Dawn.  I didn't think that one through.  This time I'm going to try a drop of hand soap.  What type of Pledge do you use?  Revive It is one I'm seeing used by modellers in their video blogs.

Pledge floor care is the new name for future.

Have to post pics from a third-party site.  Can't upload directly from your computer.

Pledge floor care is for floors not models. So many people use it or try to use it because it's cheap clear coat. But it is not the mix it used to be. I would suggest that you don't use Dawn or Pledge on you models. Use a clear coat acrylic paint for models from just about most makers. Model Masters has a great line as do most of the paint suppliers includeing Mission. Some areas are just not worth trying to cut cost corners. You can use Purple Power to strip the paint and repaint the kit. Good luck.

If you redo your paintjob and it comes time to apply a wash again, the washes made by Flory Models have been awesome.  The more I learn, the more I agree with BrandonK, that Pledge Floor Care is for floors and not models.  I don't think I'll even be using it to dip canopies anymore.  Its just too unpredictable.  Had to carefully wet sand and polish my already-painted F-16 canopy because the PFC coating on it had a bad reaction to my liquid mask that I use (which probably has dish soap of some kind in it).  I'll just be wet-sanding and Novus'ing the hell out of my canopies from now on...since I seem to have to do that twice if I dip them in PFC.

Stick with modeling clearcoats,Vallejo, Testors, Alclad,no guesswork in trying to get the right floor product.

A nice man and talented modeler who went (or goes by) "Swanny" wrote a blog a long time ago, swooning over the merits of Pledge "Future".

Thank goodness it wasn't Koolaid, otherwise most of us would be long since dead.

I fell for it hook, line and sinker like at seems everyone who returns to the hobby does. The quest for that bottle of "Future" seems more important than the first kit. I'm only poking fun because I did it too.

I still have my bottle on the shelf, though. It's become such an icon of the true modeler, I can't seem to bear to part with it.

I have two bottles of the old Future product and it works great and even Dawn has no negative effect over it as I have done some craft paint washes with Dawn to break up the surface tension. Can't comment on the newer Future which may be a different formula.

This is a common problem.  Not all types of paint and washes are compatible.

This has been a very frequent thread in the Painting and Airbrushing forum down below.  If you are going to be trying a wash for the first time, I suggest you go down to that forum and search for wash threads.

I only use the Pledge/ Future for canopys after the painting is done. The new stuff is useless for anything else.
