Broken landing gear on Tamiya 1:48 scale spitfire
Posted by Itz Marcus on Thursday, January 7, 2021 11:13 AM

Hi,

Well, my little kid knocked my almost finished spitfire and the landing gear shattered Tongue Tied. Can't fix that, but I  do have a whole extra set of landing gear but on the Tamiya the landing gear is one piece for both sides on top of which are glued two pieces covering the landing gear. Also, part of the landing gear is still glued into its locator holes. Is there any way to fix this.

Thanx

Drill a small hole into each end of the broken strut and insert a wire into one of the holes. Then glue the broken parts back together. Make sure that the holes line up. The wire will greatly reinforce the butt join.

I might state the same as the other two but I have not seen what the breaks look like.  Could you provide a picture of the broken gear?  It would help greatly to better advise.

Hi,

I don't have a way to upload pics at the moment but the gear has shattered beyond repair (not all the pieces are there.)

But on a positive note, what I did was to carefully cut through the glue seams of the pieces that covered the landing gear parts. Once done, I was able to remove the remaing part of the piece and replaced it with the extra landing gear that I had.

I'm not sure why Tamiya made both landing gears as one big piece attached with a bar with the bar covered with parts of the under wing. Most other companies make a right wheel and gear and a left one as separate parts. They may have done it for proper angling of the wheels but it can prove to be a pain if replacement is needed.

Thanx
