Monogram A-10A Thunderbolt II 1/72
Posted by Aggieman on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 3:47 PM

I have completed my first build for 2021, an original boxing of Monogram's Warthog in 72nd scale.

I remember seeing this one in model shops frequently in the late '70s but I'm having a tough time recalling if I actually ever built it.  I know that I built a 48th scale Thunderbolt II right about the time that Desert Storm kicked off, but just can't say if I ever built its older, smaller scale brother.  Then a few years ago my mother-in-law picked up this kit at a garage sale (hence the condition of the box).  The instructions were moth-eaten and I could not even touch them without further disintegration, and the decals were in such awful shape I just automatically picked up an aftermarket set for Desert Storm-era Warthogs.

My build represents an A-10A that flew with the 511th TFS / 10th TFW based out of RAF Alconbury, relocated to King Fahd Airport in Saudi Arabia in 1991 for Desert Storm.  The Annabelle II.

There are very few parts in this kit, and it goes together pretty well.  No flash on my example, nor warped parts.  Like most Monogram kits, it is intended to be built with the wheels down, but I opted to do a bit of plasti-surgery to build it wheels up.  By installing the gear doors prior to closing up the fuselage or main gear wells, I was able to get the gear doors into position without any major mis-alignments or risking the parts falling inside the model.

I didn't spend a lot of time on this one; I literally started it yesterday.  I put down a coat of AK Interactive Real Color Medium Grey for the interior parts, then painted the pilot figure.  I didn't bother with any washes or detail painting in the sparse cockpit.  Assembly probably took about 2 hours, give or take, then I masked the canopy and windscreen to finish out the assembly.  I did have some seams to fill, and quite honestly, I could have done a better job with that.

Today I painted the exterior - AK Interactive Real Colors Dark Gull Grey, Vallejo USAF Green, and Vallejo US Dark Green, with AK Interactive Real Colors Gun Metal, Model Master Metalizer Dark Anadonic Grey, Model Master Acryl Clear Blue, and Model Master Acryl Clear Red.  The Dark Gull Grey did not match the ANA code listed on the decal instruction sheet, but I didn't want to spend any $ to get the right grey.  Close enough as far as I'm concerned.

Decals went on okay.  I opted against weathering.  (Perhaps I'm painting a picture of a lazy modeler here, which I'd say is entirely accurate).

And my favorite image of the A-10 is captured in this meme:

Now on to whatever the next build will be.  I'm leaning toward the old Monogram kit, "Fighting Planes of the Thirties" with 72nd scale F4B-4, F11C Goshawk, and P-6E Hawk kits.

One of my top 5 favorite modern aircraft and I've not found a kit so far that I've liked. They've all had weird issues according to all of the reviews I've read over the years.

This is a really nice representation and I like the paint scheme. This is cool!

One day I'll pick up the best kit I can find and totally load it up.

I do have a snap tite kit in pieces somewhere I suppose I could follow your example with. I wasn't impressed with the parts fit at all, but it came pre-decorated.

This is a nice little build and you've done a good job of it. It looks like it was fun!

Its good to have a quick build every now and then. It is a hobby. For everything you said about cutting corners you'd never know great looking build.

Try the Italeri 1/72 kit. Nice panel lines, decent weapons load, and fit is pretty good.
Warning; it is a major tail sitter!

How about 1/48? Any good recommendations in that scale? Its been years since I've checked scalmates for reviews.

Thank you for your kind words.  Fun is the operative word for most of my builds.

Thank you for your kind words Johnny.

After my overly productive year 2020, I was really not in the modeling mood.  I took a couple of weeks going through my stash to determine what I might like to build this year. With the anniversary of Desert Storm this month, this A-10 seemed like a good start to the year.  The kit itself is decent, not difficult by any stretch of the imagination, but also not one that I felt needed a lot of extra elbow grease.  I could have loaded it out with ordinance, but that honestly felt like more effort than it was worth; and I found a number of DS-era photos of Warthogs without loadouts (parked on the tarmac rather than airborne).

I've only ever done the Monogram in 1/48, but a quick look at scalemates shows kits by Italeri, AMT/Ertl, ESCI, Hobbycraft, Revell (which is likely the Monogram kit), Tamiya, and Hobby Boss.  I've read not-so-good things about the Tamiya kit.  I'm not familiar with ESCI; AMT/Ertl can be more miss-than-hit in my experience, and I'm not sure that I'd think much of the Hobbycraft kit given the reputation I've seen on them (to be fair, I do have two Hobbycraft kits in my to-build pile for this year, but these will be the first two I've built from that mfg).

Given previous good experience with Italeri and Hobby Boss, I'd suggest taking a look at those kits.

Thanks for your kind words, TB!

The stand comes from flightpose.com.  They come in 3 heights (2.5", 4", and 6") although the first and last of those is currently listed as sold out.  The stand in the photo is the 2.5" version.  Highly recommend these stands.  They are positionable and have rubber "feet" on the bottom.

I personally would not touch the 1/48 Italeri kit. I've got one that I banished to the kit graveyard (that's the step beyond Shelf of Doom.) and I foresee a terrible in flight emergency for it somewhere in the very near future.

If 1/48 is your thing, I'd go for either the Revellogram or the Tamiya keeping in mind Tamiya will need AM cockpit details.

I'm not familiar with the HobbyBoss kit.

Nice work on that one, Aggieman!  I remember building that kit when I was 10 or 11.  Did yours have the little TF33 engine that you could display?

I'm with Straycat1911 on the 1/48 Italeri kit.  When I built my Tamiya into an early A-10A with the JAWS camo as my first one after a 25 year break, I bought the Italeri kit just so I could use the decals.  I was planning on building the Italeri one some day as well, but I wasn't a fan of that rubbery plastic they use in a lot of their kits (like the Testors/Italeri U-2 and SR-71 for example).  Built the Revellogram 1/48 one when I was 12 or 13.  As I recall, that was a pretty good kit too, with lots of rivet detail that I promptly and completely trashed with my budding modeling skills.  The Tamiya was a decent kit, but as already said, the cockpit still has the flat panels that you put decals on...something that was pretty standard when that kit first came out.  The seat in it is pretty basic, but looks close enough to the ESCAPAC seat in the early IOT&E A-10s, so that's the era I went for when I built mine.

Great build. Nicely done. I remember that kit as a kid. I will certainly have to look into a couple of those stands. Planes just look so much better with gear up. Of course the A-10 looks awesome either way! I have the 1/48 newer, boxing of the Revell kit that has been on the shelf of doom for a while. This one has fought me with fit issues-lots of putty and card stock to fill the gaps. I just had enough and stored it. I will have to just dig down one day and complete it just to get it done.
