I've been wanting to build an F-15C. At a recent show I picked up a J model. I understand the J is based on the C. Anyone know what external changes there are between a J and a C. From google images there does not seem to be much. I will have no problems making decals for any that are unavailable as generic USAF markings- stars & bars and such.

The two aircraft are pretty much identical, with the exception of the RWR, ECM, and nuclear capability. I don't think those differences result in any significant difference in appearance. Aside from the few avionics differences, they're the same aircraft.

mawright20Don, if my memory serves me correct, the only significant difference I’m aware of is that they are not capable of air refueling. This was part of the license agreement for the J/Japanese builds.
(Makes note to self for my Hasegawa J.)

If there is any external visual difference, it's going the be the "bullet" fairings on the top of the vertical stabilizers for those items. Nothing major, but slightly different from the fairings on the C.

The bullet on the tail is the only difference most people would notice, didn't know about the refueling thing. I saw the first ones for JASDF arrive and they landed at Kadena. They had no markings at the time and were kept in a large hanger for a short time. When the came out their markings and numbers had been put on. I'm not sure bit I think the font for the numbers and maybe the letters were not the standard block type the A.F. used. It was a long time ago.
On a side note, they can claim the first F-15 kill in the Pacific once they went fully active. We got a report that their alert aircraft were scrambling to intercept Russian aircraft, not a uncommon thing by any means over there.
As they were heading out to takeoff, one of the pilots accidently launched a sidewinder. It was hot and had locked onto a target. It gets a little fuzzy here as to how, buit the result was that the missile went after its target and nailed it. Two pilots were on the steps of their HQ building when the missile blew up a card that had just parked that belonged to one of the pilots on the steps.
Less than a year later during a O.R.I. inspection one of our guys flying in a trail formation fired two at the guys ahead of him. When he slipped and accidently fired the first one he flinched and let a second one go. He immediately warned everyone and the whole formation scattered. The missiles were cold and wandered off to self destruct. It made a interesting scene watching the Colonel try to tap dance around his story to PACAF HQ.

Js and DJs still have the refueling receptacle.
Thanks, guys. Looks like I can proceed with the project.
Just found this page with some decent pics of the exterior differences. Scroll down toward the bottom of the 6th post to see them.
