Lindberg XFY-1 VTO POGO . . . Tail Painted . . .
Posted by fotofrank on Thursday, October 28, 2021 1:26 PM

I picked up this kit at Modelpalooza last weekend, $15, I think. The last Lindberg kit I built was their Me 262. I think I was stilll in high school. I've seen a couple of these built and I think it will be an interesting build for me. This will be a good test of my modeling skills and the stuff I've learned since returning to the hobby. It'll have a resin cockpit as soon as I find one that's suitable. The airplane is going to be finished as a "what-if". Not too sure what it will be, but something cool and colorful, that's for sure.

I had that two at one time, or maybe twice.  I saw it there and was tempted but had other things to do at the time.

There used to make a model of the XF-90 and the XF-91 Thindercepter.

A couple other verticle aircraft were the Verti-jet and the Hiller transport that tilted its entire wing for a steep angle takeoff and landing.

 .

I just had to show myself what the airplane is going to look like when it's done.

Not the best photo. Everything is just kinda pushed together.

Now there's something you don't see everyday! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

I've heard this is a bit rough as kits go- best of luck Frank! It's a unique subject for sure!

AH yes the days of VTOL. The POGO, the X-13, and one other I cannot remember at the moment. The concept of VTOL was finally successful when the Brits produced the Harrier.

You want colorful and cool paint job I'd say Blue Angels. If I remember right that kit had the counter rotating props that worked. Fond memories of the early days of plastic model kits.

Since this is a "what-if" I thought about U.S. Navy during Vietnam. Done up like an A-4 Skyhawk or an A-6 Corsair II. Finally, my decision came down to some sort of U.S. Air Force scheme. I still need to find some ordinance to hang on the wings though.

I don't think the POGO would have been a very good gun platforn though.

I ordered this Aires F-100C cockpit for the POGO yesterday.

An $18.00 upgrade for a $15.00 kit.

I've never worked with resin before this.

Finished the propeller system for the POGO this morning. It's like a model all by itself. There's a nifty gear system inside the spinner that works to make for a counter-rotating propeller. Cool. The kit instructions call for the spinner and prop blades to be flat black. How boring! I painted the spinner pieces Tamiya insignia red, white and blue. Much nicer. The blades are Tamiya NATO black and the tips are Tamiya flat yellow. This will look good sitting atop the NMF POGO fuselage.

Just had a hunch that this was going to be a very interesting build and it's starting to head in that direction. V-e-d-d-y I-n-t-a-d-e-s-t-i-n-g.

I have thought about a Thunderbirds scheme, Jeaton. I still might.

Now that's a propeller! Or two. Beautiful. I remember building a Pogo when I was in my teens. Interesting, impractical concept -- Elon Musk showed us that you don't even need eyes to land tail first!

On the bench: A diorama to illustrate the crash of a Beech T-34B Mentor which I survived in 1962 (I'm using Minicraft's 1/48 model of the Mentor), and a Pegasus model of the submarine Nautilus of 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas fame.

Most of the assembly work is done so I've started sanding seams on the POGO. I'm getting some coordination back in my right arm and hand. I can hold an emory board to do some sanding on seams, so that's progress. I might try to do some airbrushing on the POGO tomorrow. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow too, so stay tuned.

The POGO is getting closer to paint. As I've been getting more motion and dexterity in my right hand, I've been sanding seams on the model. It's kinda tough to see the sanded seams on white plastic so I'll give the seams a shot of silver paint to expose any areas that still need work. I did mock up the model again today just to see the size and shape before I start painting. Must have been quite an airplane in real life. So this is how the airplane looks right now:

Oh wow, that prop spinner is amazing! Looking forward to seeing the rest come together.

Hope your arm is better soon, as they say slow and steady and set her aside and take a break when you feel like it.

A little more progress on the POGO today. The two tails were first painted Tamiya Flat White, then I cut stencils on my Silhouette Portrait and applied the masks to the tails and sprayed Tamiya Flat Red. Turned out pretty nice I think. Next up will be the blue stars on the tails. Was it Jeaton who suggested The Thunderbirds?

I do not recall how many of the Pogo were built, but there is one on display on a base in Florida. If I recall where I'll post it.
