Tamiya Skyraider WIP

Have you ever pondered whether or not the Douglas Skyraider would be such a popular modeling subject if not for the fact that migs where shot down by the only US Navy A-1 Squadron with cool markings? Fortunately, we do not have to answer that question.

Personally, I have always loved the skyraider since the day it was introduced to me back in 198(?) something, at the local K-Mart.  The box art/photo looked amazing. The big bumblebee on the tail combined with big red bombs/fuel tanks, and red and white striped propeller tips was more than I could take--the kit was coming home with me.

I am not sure what ever happened to my Monogram A-1H, but I do have distict memeories of brush painting those big drop tank bomb thingies with Testors Flat Red. Naturally, when Tamiya released their version of the kit with the same markings, I had to have it.

I am not sure when exactly I purchased my Tamiya Skyraider kit; however, I am pretty sure it's been on the shelf for at least 10 years.

I did some initial work when I had bought the kit (speed brakes glued in place and started the cockpit). I think it got put on 'the shelf' because I was very displeased with the poor job I did gluing in the speed breaks in place..

Now I am finally getting  back to work on my Tamiya A-1H. So far I have got the wings together and finished the cockpit (added PE seat belts and picked out some switches with red/yellow tamiya acrylics).

I also cleaned out the speek break lines with a tamiya PE saw and sanded the surounding fuselage (where I had spattered glue) with a 1500 grit sanding sponge and airbrushed said are with gull grey.

After painting, the speed breaks look perfectly fine.

I have also painted the exterior area around the cockpit to ease masking later and am ready to close up fuselage.

The kit is definately on my list to finish in 2022. I plan on finishing with with Tamiyas LP paints and either use the kit markings or the ones from the CE sheet I have.

Hello!

Lookin' good! I'm going to watch this one too - although my favourite is the USAF variation of the Skyraider.

And I wouldn't say it is a popular modelling subject - a Mustang, Bf-109 or a Tiger tank - those are popular modelling subjects. Skyraider is almost niche!

Good luck with your build and have a nice day!

Totally know where you're coming from about the Skyraider.  For me it was "Love at first sight".  It's been my favorite post-war aircraft and it's #2 on my most favorite aircraft list right after the P-38 Lightning.  I think that it's its stout "pug" look, if that makes any sense.  It's not sleek or graceful looking by any means but with its dark exhaust stains, under wings stores mounted up(remember the toilet that was dropped from a Skyraider)and oil constantly dripping underneath it just oozes power.  Your kit is looking great so far.  The cockpit looks very detailed and your brakes look fine.  I'll be following this build closely. (BTW to prove how much I love this aircraft, presently have 3 of the old Revell 1/40 scale kits, 2 of their 1/48 Skyraiders, 2 of Tamiya's kits, 1 ESCI, and 2 of the 3 1/32 Trumpeter kits, all presently in the stash waiting to be built.  Yea, I know, I have a problem.

Thanks for posting that picture!  I couldn't remember if that "toilet" bombing happened during the Korean or Vietnam War.

I was wondering if these were the 'other' markings in the Tamiya kit, but no, their markings are for 577...

I attended a model contest over the weekend and purchased Monogram's old Navy Skyraider kit.  It was a Skyraider the price was okay but to my surprise inside the box were aftermarket munitions and racks!  Since I have various Skyraiders in both 1/48 & 1/32 scales, does anyone make toilets in that scale?

Just doing a little engine work. Brush painting Testors Gloss Gray was very enjoyable I must say...

I did make he mistake of painting the fake firewall (for lack of a better term) with Pollyscale on top of Tamiya.. It cracked up like a dry lake bed. I have since re-done that area with Tamiya semigloss black..

Thought I would post a few picks of the bench scene.  Not much of an update today that would be visually noteworthy. Spent the morning fixing any seem issues with the fuselage joints and same thing for 1 drop tank. Also cleaned up tail hook and prop.

Brengun made a scale toilet/rack with a decals set.

Great looking cockpit and engine. Tamyia paint is not compatable with many other brands. Once I sprayed Tamyia paint over Testors' paint and the Tamyia crinkle cracked.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Hasegawa did the toilet bomb Skyraider in 1/72.

There's a lot of physics to what bombs do when they are released.

Depending on the weight of the bomb, the speed of the aircraft and atmospheric conditions, the dropped object may drop straight down, angle off, or fly along with the bomber for awhile.

I recall reading that the toilet, which weighed very lttle, banged along for a bit under the wing before it rotated enough to present the bowl to the airstream.

Here is an update on my Tamiya Skyraider.  Finished work on the engine/cowling, prop painting and got the anti-glare panel and rudder painted on the fuselage...

I plan on completing the fuselage , including decals and weathering, then attching the finished/painted wing (then attaching ordnance and things under wings).

If you are wondering why I would do such a unorthodox thing, well it's because this is just going to be a relaxing fun build of one of my favorite plane/marking combos.

I am also hoping to 'get it right' when it comes to the exhaust stains on the fuselage.. which would be quite difficult with the wings attached..

They actually dropped an enamel/steel kitchen sink/short countertop in Korea.  IIRC from pics, I think it was loaded on one of the left inboard stations.

Nice work on her, looking forward to seeing her when finished.  Have that kit, planned as a "Sandy"
