SR-71 Blackbird cockpit color
Posted by cwalker3 on Friday, May 6, 2022 9:57 AM

Just picked up the new Revell kit and must say that it is a beast. The box is the size of a suitcase and the plane body takes up the whole thing. like the title says, I'm looking for the coclor of the cockpit. The instructions call for aluminum but the colors I've seen on the net look to be a light grey or blue. Im color-blind so it's hard for me to tell from pics.

As always, thanks for the help.

Cary, I share your pain about color vision, but I just got the kit too and my instructions call for I kid you not "Light Mouse Grey".  But I'm sure that's the Dark Gull Grey used in USAF cockpits of the time.

You're right, it was light mouse grey, not auminum. I was looking at the wheel wells when i came up with aluminum. Dark gull grey sounds about right and matches what I saw on the net.

Thanks John!

Gunship Grey is closer to the SR-71As interior color, IMHO.

Congradulations to everyone that has purchased this kit. The finished product will be outstanding.

This is a photo of the actual cockpit. Those orange dots on the windscreen frame are blobs of sealant.

This is a photo of the two cockpits of my model. I think that I used Testors' Gunship Grey. Keep in mind that very little of the cockpits are visible once the canopies are installed.

I have only one suggestion for you guys that are building this model. Do not install the main landing gear in the sequence as described in the instructions. If you do so, the gear will probably get broken off as construction progresses. Take a look at my WIFP. I figured out a way to install the main landing gear at the very end of the build. Also, the part numbrs for the landing gear were incorrect in my instructions. It is impossible to assemble the landing gear per the instructions. Again, take a look at my WIP.  Have fun!!

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

I was hoping Johnny would chime in - brilliant build and should be a great reference.
