A-1J Skyraider

My latest. The Tamiya kit, with a few resin goodies: Stanley Yankee seat by True Details, gun barrels and rear cockpit boot enclosure from Quickboost, Caracal decals. The exhaust stains are thick enough to write in, I know. This was my first time using AK exhaust wash. At first, I tried applying it by brush and diluted with mineral spirits but all that did was eat up the dull coat. Of course, I thought of airbrushing the stuff next, which I should've done from the start. This wash is nice stuff, it goes through an airbrush  so well and lays down so smooth. Since I was trying to cover the damaged spots of clear coat anyway, I just went ahead and laid it down heavy. Somebody out there might well dust off the old chestnut 'no crew chief would ever let it get that way', but whatever.

I'm also taking the opportunity to exercise a few pointers somebody here brought up not too long ago about taking better photos. Specifically, cleaning up the background of cluttered details and using more light. Not much better, but then I'm doing this all on a kindle.

Beautiful Skyraider!  I think that your weathering looks appropriate and very realistic.  I've yet to attempt the Southeast Asia camo scheme myself.  My favorite post war prop plane.

Hello!

Your model is lookin' good, but I think you didn't get the dirt down quite right. I think you underestimate how dirty the Skyraider could get, and the priority of the crew chiefs was to keep 'em running, and the time was better spent on keeping a tab on the oil leaks rather than cleaning the paint job up. At the same time the dirt was kinda "concentrated" around the engine. Somehow the wings stayed relatively clean. I also like how the "rain streaks" formed where there was more soot than oil:

Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

Pawel

Nice job!  I love that kit, did the Navy version.  Definitely loaded for bear there.

Thanks,

John
