Looking for more, but where and who?
Posted by ModelMadness on Friday, January 6, 2023 6:51 AM

So going through my planes I have built I was looking at the ones I still have to build and one thing popped out.  Most of my planes are fighters from WWII and with some jets.  But what I have been itching for are the mid-size realm.  I just got done with my B-25 and that's it, no mid-size.  I build 1/48 scale and I am looking for more mid-size planes from WWII like a B-26 or a Heinkel.  What model maker has a good selection on the 1/48 side of things?

For jets I have the typical guys; F4, F15, F16, Etc. but what about the stranger looking ones?  Avro Vulcan, SAAB Viggen, F100 Voodoo.  Hell even the Concord is on my mind for a build as well as the Airbus 380.

Anyways, I've looked at Tamiya, Revelle-Monogram and some of the more popular names and they do not seem to have what I am looking for so wondering if the not so named companies are the ones making these kits.  I found this at Wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_model_aircraft_manufacturers

Huge list under Scale Kits - Plastic.  Not sure who to stay away from and who I should check out for the planes I am looking for

As always thank you and I look forward to your comments

Check out Scalemates.  They have reviews of a large number of kits

Google any individual kit you might me interested in for build blogs and reviews as a blanket statement cannot be made about any one company's kits.

Not exactly clear on the ask but for 1/48 mid-size/bigger birds I have

Italeri S3 viking

Hobby Boss A6

Kinetic EA-6

Kittyhawk (now defunct) made a couple Voodoo kits, I have the f-101b

Trumpeter F-100

Revell, Minicraft, Hasegawa, Skyline Airfix are nice 1/144 or 1/200 airliners kits

I did the Revell Airbus A380.  Nice kit

Anyhow, check out some of those manufacturers 1/48 offerings - pretty extensive.

Thanks,

John

As others have said, Googling kit reviews and build logs is going to be your best bet.  Every model manufacturer has produced gems...along with a few turkeys here and there...just depends on which one of their teams made the kit, how old the mold is, etc.  For some of the more unusual aircraft, a couple of Ukrainian manufacturers have some really interesting stuff.  Those manufacturers are A Model and ICM.  I have a 1/48 OV-10A from ICM.  Haven't started building it yet, but I've heard really good things about it, and it looks like a really high quality, well-engineered kit.  Saw a really unusual one from A Model the other day...an old Soviet Myasishchev M-50A in 1/72.  I know nothing about the kit, but MAN what a wild looking aircraft!

And to add another wrinkle the name on the box of any kit does not mean that is where it came from. Even today there are kits from 1960s molds floating around in shiny new packaging even though the "manufacturer" is the fifth or sixth one releasing them.

As far as the B-26 Marauder in 1/48th scale goes, apparently ICM is bringing out a new kit of the Marauder this year, a B-26B (short-winged)  Many who aren't happy with the classic Monogram kit are looking forward to that release.  You might be interested in marking that one down for yourself.

I saw that ICM B-26B available for pre-order on Kitlinx yesterday.  Their post says it is released today, but found another forum posting where it appears the kit won't release until the end of this year.  Bummer, I was ready to get that one right now.

I've built an ICM Luftwaffe subject in the past, the Do215B5.  It's a fine kit, which leads me to an expectation that the Do217Z2, Bristol Beaufort, and A-26 that I have in my stash will also be good kits.  ICM also has several variants of Ju88s and He111s in their catalogue that OP might check out.

HK Models has a new B-25 in 1/48th, but I believe I have enough Mitchells in my stash. If memory serves, they were the first to bring to market a 1/32 Mitchell.  It tooks years, but they finally down-sized that B-25 to 48th.  And now they have a 1/32 A-20 Havoc coming this year.  Really hoping they'll do a 48th Havoc, as the only available kit in that scale is the old AMT/Ertl kit.

I don't know if you would regard these as "mid size", but you can still find them knocking around.

In the queue: 1/48 Beech Staggerwing (RAAF), P38 (RAAF), Vultee Vengeance (RAAF), Spitfire Vb (Malta), Spitfire VIII x2 (RAAF), P39 x2 (RAAF), Martin Baltimore (Malta?), Martin Maryland (Malta), Typhoon NF1b, Hellcat x2 (FAA)

Yeah, I saw a post on Hyperscale, that shared a Hannant's page announcing the release, for the fourth quarter of this year:

https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/ICM48320?result-token=uPGUc

They're taking backorders now.  But I still can't find any mention of this kit on ICM's own website.  If it is released, I'll get one.  I think the -B is appropriate for a Midway B-26.  I've long planned to convert the Monogram kit, but that'll take a lot of work and if I can get the version out of the box, more or less, I'd rather do that.

I personally think Monogram and Tamiya have the best line up of 1/48 WW2 aircraft...  Id go to EBAY and search 1/48 Monogram or 1/48 Tamiya and watch what pops up...

We will have to see what model it is.  Kitlinx shows a photo of 40-1370, an Alaskan B-26-MA-0, not a B model, which the 0 model would be better.  One of the 2 B models for Midway was this one:

https://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b-26/41-17570.html

This one is a B-MA-0 which is like the 1/72 Monogram Snap-tite one.

WIP:  Monogram 1/72 B-26 (Snaptite) as 73rd BS B-26, 40-1408, torpedo bomber attempt on Ryujo

Monogram 1/72 B-26 (Snaptite) as 22nd BG B-26, 7-Mile Drome, New Guinea

Minicraft 1/72 B-24D as LB-30, AL-613, "Tough Boy", 28th Composite Group

Well thank you all.  Lots of good info.  Love that A380, that was a great job done.

I will start digging around to add to my collection

I had an outright ball building this Viggen. Can get it from hobbylinc.com (at least you used to be able to...) where this link will hopefully send you:

For the Century Series jets in 1/48, the Monogram kits are hard to beat, especially for the cost. There are some other companies who make some of those types:Hasegawa, Kinetic, Trumpeter, Kitty Hawk... but those tend to cost quite a bit more. In twin engined medium bombers, ICM has a great line up of German types. Dragon and Revellogram made a few as well. Accurate Miniatures made some great B-25s, and AMT made some fine A-20s. Those molds have passed to other companies now. Airfix is coming out with some great stuff that covers a lot of neglected RAF & FAA subjects. Also take a look at Eduard, their weekend edition kits are some to look at for more affordable pricing compared to their other boxings that come with all the PE & resin upgrade bling. Zvezda is another company to check out for WWII Soviet types.

Look for a particular type, and the better kit offerings can be more easily recommended.
