Great Wall Hobby F-15 Strike Eagle Help
Posted by pmm736 on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 8:54 PM

Just returned home from a trip to the UK where my son-in-law is in the Air Force based at RAF Lakenheath servicing F-15s with the 48th Fighter Wing. We had the awesome oportunity to go out to the flight line to watch the pre-flight and take off of a half dozen F-15E's. An actual close up, hands on experience! Although I am exclusively a WWII modeler (and really only ships and armor at that) I immediately decided I needed to build a model of an F-15 in honor of the visit. After looking around I found the Great Wall Hobby kit (#L4822), and although it was decidedly more expensive than any of the other kits I found, it seemed to be pretty detailed and (hopefully) pretty accurate. It also had the added advantage of having the correct markings for the Lakenheath Mudhens, so I would not have to source decals from somewhere else. Since this build is definitely not in my area of expertise (and I use the term expertise loosely, lol) if anyone here can provide any insight into this kit in particular or modern A/C building in general, I am all ears. Thanks and apologies for the long winded post.

You might well already know this, but if you go to You Tube and type in a specific subject, such as Great Wall Hobby F-15 Strike Eagle and the scale, you might be surprised at what pops up. That has been a great help to me several times.

Sometimes it's a full build, other times a review by the builder. But even the just reviews can often be very helpful by pointing out flaws AND fixes. I hope it leads you to something.

Hah!  You think you're long-winded?  You should see me when I get going sometimes.  LOL.

For anything modern, especially a Mudhen, I highly recommend Quinta Studio cockpit sets.  Really great way to add a lot of detail and authenticity without too much brain damage in getting it done.  Another company that makes great aftermarket stuff for the engines on an F-15 is KA Model.  They have 3D printed exhaust/nozzle sets that are so intricately detailed, they're like little jewels right out of the box.  Just cut off the block on the bottom of them, paint, and they're done.  No fiddling around with individual actuators and tiny rods.

Thanks Eaglecash.  I actually just ordered the KA Models nozzles.   I've never heard of Quinta Studios but I will definitely take a look at them.  Just can't help myself with the aftermarket no matter the kit or subject.
