I use it sparingly on the clear area of the decals, and if too much is applied it can affect the paint. When that has happened I just did some local touch up. It is important not to flood the decal and there is no need to do so.

Great job with the P47D! I have the Tamiya 1/48 razorback in my stash too. Hope it will turn out half as good as yours!

Love that term, family photo. Like others, I love that one too Big Smile

Can you share with us how Tamiya extra thin is used with decals? Won't it affect the paint job below?

Masterful work, John. I really like your method of fading the O.D. paint and that you kept the wear and tear to a minimum. Very nicely done.

One of these days I'm going to try that Koster mod for the Thunderbolt. Very nice.

I need to try that Extra thin cement trick on silvered decals.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Thanks, Omar, much appreciated. The Tamiya kit is a real gem. The last time I worked with the Monogram kit was when I used one as a donor for the Koster vacform conversion. It was not a difficult build.

Hey John, I've been trying to post over on MSC, but for some reason, my replies to your thread aren't getting posted.

I just wanted to compliment you on your Razorback. As you know, I'm wrestling with a Revellogram restoration myself. I have Tamiya's Bubbletop in my stash, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Despite all the great things I've seen and heard about the Tamiya -47s, I have yet to build mine. When I do, I hope it turns out as well as yours.

I have wanted to do Bud Mahurin's P-47 since I read his biography so it was a natural to use the second marking option in this Tamiya kit. I applied a base coat of Alclad 101 aluminum, folowed by Alclad Gloss Clear which makes it easier to do worn areas as the clear keeps tooling from getting through the Alclad to the plastic. Several different Olive Drab shades were applied randomly to get a more realitic impression of fading.

There were a lot of stencils on this one and I was concerned about silvering on the OD finish. Tamiya Extra Thin is best used carefully but it is a quick and sure cure for silvering on stencils. I have not done it with acrylics, everything on this one's exterior is enamel of one kind or another. Probably OK but take care. I don't use it on large decals but on this one I didn't need to. It instantly melts the decal film but doesn't seem to bother the printing. On large decals such as the squadron codes if there is a need I just brush paint over the problem areas with the underlying color before the flat coat.

I still see one decal trying to silver on the left lower gear door but the finished pictures are taken. The last two photos are with a Hasegawa D-25, the Pro Modeler P-47N, and an XP-72 from a Koster Monogram conversion.
