New plane names
Posted by jimz66 on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 9:01 PM
How is a new plane named? Is it done by the lead engineer, committee, who gets the honor to name new planes? Are there names lost to history or are they remembered for ever? Does anyone know? Thanks for chiming in?

What are the criterea for types of plane names? Do they even have criterea?

I think the manufacturer get the honor, but i don't know who exactly... There's usually a theme the manufacturer's follow, like DeHaviland names their planes after incects, Lockheed in a celestial theme, etc...

Then again, the service requesting the A/C may have a requirement, like the army insisting that all its choppers be named after indian tribes (Comanchie, Apachie, Kiowa, etc..). On the other hand, sometimes the name given by the soldiers who use them just stick... i.e.: UH-1 Huey.

Just rambling. Feel free to correct me. Big Smile [:D]

well, normally the press gives a hand in it, and some the work crews, for example when the b-17 came out the press dubed it the flying fortress, which stuck, altho russian planes are given code names from nato, and yes russians do like that, and some hate the names given, as far as like f..b.. f is for fighter, i is for interceptor, b is for bomber, i think you get the picture.

My only knowledge in this area is the Spitfire - RJ Mitchell thought it was a "bloody silly name". The name was chosen by the Chief of Supermarine, who's name escapes me. To think it could have been named the Shrew - doesn't have the same ring to it, somehow...!

Would have buggered up Hollywood! Just imagine the German pilots calling out "Achtung! Shrew!" Just doesn't quite have that agressive quality somehow!!! Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

In the queue: 1/48 Beech Staggerwing (RAAF), P38 (RAAF), Vultee Vengeance (RAAF), Spitfire Vb (Malta), Spitfire VIII x2 (RAAF), P39 x2 (RAAF), Martin Baltimore (Malta?), Martin Maryland (Malta), Typhoon NF1b, Hellcat x2 (FAA)
