Finished! Operation Torch P40K
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 6, 2004 9:28 PM
Woohoo! She is finished! Hooray! Big Smile [:D]

This is my first attempt at a muti-colored camo paint job. Not my best paint job (ok ok...it's only my third airbrushes model) ever but I sorta had to hurry it up and finish her off before this weekend. It's also my first attempt at using PE detail parts to enhance the model...good lessons learned and again, THANKS to everyone on the board! Enjoy!

Looks great, ken ! The PE ring & bead sight make a BIG difference. What is the kit & scale? (1/48 AMT?)
Well done !

Ken, very nice job for only your third model. Looks like you are a fast learner and have some talent. Thanks for sharing.

Opps! Sorry I forgot...it's a HobbyCraft 1/48 kit (actually just an OLD ERTL reboxed kit). It had a really bad wing fit and I had to do some cutting, warping and styrene laying to get the wings to work right. Alot of work but it turned good, yes?

Great looking P-40, Ken! I too really like the job you did on weathering and the exhaust stains.

What paints/colors did you use for the camo? I'm working on several MTO P-40s now, and am getting to the point of (finally) painting them (once I get a better airbrushBig Smile [:D]).

Were those the kit decals or aftermarket? I'd like to pick up some!

Love that weathering. How'd you do the scuffing around the panel lines? The cockpit looks great aswell. Did you freehand the camo job?

great work.

Thanks for all the kind remarks! Big Smile [:D] I try hard and am a slight perfectionist at heart so it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Cool [8D]

Here are some answer to ya'lls questions:

obiwan ps:
QUOTE: do the flaps come dropped with the kit?

Nope. I had to drop the flaps and build the wing frame box...sorry don't a pict of that yet. I also droped the cowl flaps up front Smile [:)]

Mark Joyce:
QUOTE: What paints/colors did you use for the camo? Were those the kit decals or aftermarket?

I used Model Master enamels this time for all the paints except for black...i'm going back to acrylic!
The Belly is RAF Azure Blue,
The light top color is RAF Middle Earth
The dark top color is RAF Dark Stone
The dark stone was very hard to work with...it did not airbrush well and dried very quickly giving an overall "uneven" look. Took several attempts and mask cutouts to get it right.
The decals were in the kit and are a very high quality and just labeled as "hobbycraft" on the bottom.

shrikes:
QUOTE: painted or decaled instrument faces?

The instrument faces (sorta obscured in the shadow) are actually three film sheets and a PE instrument dash. The switches and knobs are a combo of dry brushing and a gray wash.

kik36:
QUOTE: whatcha thinking of doing next??

I don't know...i have to go play Army in Texas for a few months and have to put up my brushes for a bit Sad [:(] I'm thinking something German Smile [:)]

pingtang :
QUOTE: How'd you do the scuffing around the panel lines? Did you freehand the camo job?

The scuffing was actually really easy. I took some masking tape and laid it along and just off the panel line that was toward the front of the plane...then took the base color mixed in with some white and gently air brushed along the tape. So you get a hard edge in the panel line and soft edge where the scuffing is. Smile [:)] Then I washed it with a gray to fill in the panel lines across the plane. When you seal it blends in really nicely. I did the same on the bottom too. Big Smile [:D]

The camo paint was mostly airbrushed using a soft mask (ie blue-tack and stiff paper)...but the dark stone was very hard to air brush and I had to go back over freehand with the middle earth on the edge to touch it up.
