Dc-3 Ac-47 undercolor
Posted by rebelreenactor on Friday, May 7, 2004 11:20 AM
hi there,

Im going to be building a ac 47 skytrain and a glider to go with it, for the D-Day GB. I was wondering what the under color for these to aircraft would be. I want to try salt weathering . If you could tell me what the color should be, in modelmaster or tamiya, that would be great .

Thanks guys

The U.S. versions were painted in Olive Drab over Neutral Gray. Some U.S. AC also had patches of Dark Green (possibly RAF Dk. Green) on the topside. Not sure about the British underside color. For their version, you may want to do a search for "Dakota." (the British nickname for the C-47.

The vast majority of RAF Dakotas in 1944 were painted in the same OD/ Neutral Grey in which they left the factory. With Allied air supremacy over the landing grounds and beaches, the Brits didn't see the point in wasting time and resources in giving their Daks a more 'tactical' finish.

Note, of course, that the AC-47 was an entirely different bird, and, for operations in 'Nam, mostly had matt black undersides.
Cute and cuddly, boys, cute and cuddly!
