Razorback props - comments wanted
Posted by crockett on Friday, May 7, 2004 9:06 PM
I've got the Hasegawa 1/48th Razorback under construction, it will be finished as a member of the 404th. The kit comes with both props, but, I believe my reference photo depicts a D20 with a Hamilton Standard. It shows the "bulb" standard spinner rather than the early conical spinner. I'm planning on depicting it per the photo. The Hasegawa kit gives me one spinner (conical) with the two prop options. Was the Hamilton Standard fitted to the jug with the conical spinner?Question [?]

As I understand it, there are three types of propellers used by the Jugs, the Hamilton Standard, the Curtiss Electric and the Curtiss asymetrical type.

This is just my observation based on photos I've seen: Hamilton Standard with 'bulb' spinner. Curtiss Electric and Curtiss asymetrical type with conical spinner. However, not very sure on this because the quality of the photos are not good, there are Hamilton Standard propellers with cuff that use the conical spinner( the blades look like Hamilton but definitely they have cuffs) on Bubbletop P-47s.

For Razorbacks, it is definitely 'bulb' spinner for Hamiltons and conical for the Curtiss type. Hope this helps.

Did a little research since I posted. Come to find out, yes, there were 3 different props. The original Curtis prop and then the Hamilton and a paddle blade Curtis Electric, which was fitted to later models. Depending on where the jug was produced, either Evansville or Farmingdale, determined which prop they would get -- for a while. Eventually, they all had the Curtis paddle blade (including the "N"). My references show D-22 aircraft with the Hamilton prop, so that is the way I'll finish it. Apparently, this is not a very interesting topic as only one member has responded. Thanks for that response, I appreciate it.

There were actually four props used on the P-47D-M series. The Hamilton Standard only used the one type prop boss on the P-47 Thunderbolt, however. Hope this helps.
