models started that will never be finished.....
Posted by JGUIGNARD on Thursday, April 3, 2003 8:06 PM
"Mark IV" ( aka Rick ) started a "wokbench queen" forum in the auto section. I thought it was an excellent idea, so I am starting one here. Rick encouraged the auto folks to submit photos, so I will too (although I don't have any to submit myself).

My "queens":

Airfix 1/48th Spitfire Vb - replaced by Tamiya kit

Otaki 1/48th Spitfire VIII - replaced by Hasegawa kit

Hobbycraft 1/48th Spitfire XIV - replaced by Academy kit

Otaki 1/48th P-47D - replaced by Tamiya kit

Monogram 1/48th P-51B - replaced by Tamiya kit

Matchbox 1/72nd Beaufighter TF X - replaced by Hasegawa 1/48th kit

I have to admit that I had stopped work on all of the above listed models long, long ago, but the arrival of the new kits just sealed their fate. Come to think of it, the Airfix Spitfire is painted and has decals on it. There may be a chance of it being finished some day !

I only have 2 "Queens":

Italeri 1/35 M-24 Chaffee:
Almost finished with the build. Been like that for about 2 years! Was doing it as Kojak's "Sherman" from "The Battle of the Bulge," to go along with an Italeri M-47 I actually did finish as Quint's "King Tiger." (You can see that on page 4 of the following site)http://homepage1.nifty.com/lefthand/16afv/16afv_page01/16afv_1.html

Academy (well, Tamiya) 1/25 Jagdpanther:
Built and painted, awaiting weathering. Been that way about a year and a half.
Right now it looks like a beautiful showroom model.

Both became "queens" when I moved, and they got shuffled aside. Started and finished quite a few projects since then. Don't know why I just don't get on 'em and get 'em done!
That's a good topic: analyzing WHY we let them become "queens!"

Wait, sorry! Just realized this was the aircraft forum! Sorry to bore you with armor "queens."
Nope, no half-built aircraft...all are either in the box or hanging from the ceiling (no room on the shelves--too many tanks!)!!

I started a Pioneer 2, TA-154 about 12 years ago and quit the hobby. When I started back up the kit didn't seem all that appealing. All the scratch built parts are in metal Sucrets box and look great, but still I can't bring my self to finish this long suffering kit. I leave this kit where I can see it, hoping to find the motivation to build it someday.

Got an old Hawk P-51D kit that I can't seem to finish.....something about that Tamiya 51D that I finished after I had started on the other kit. :)

The "replacement phenomena" is scary, eh?
I just know that if I buy that outrageously overpriced old 1/144 Otaki C-5 and get halfway into it, Hasegawa's gonna crank one out...

Domi,

Thats quite a list you got going there. I especially like the fact that you have various "levels" of long term storage. I have two categories, inprogress or waiting to start. About 7 or 8 years ago I had about 30 kits that I new would never see the light of day. I gave some of them to my nephew. The majority of them that were not started I reshrinkwrapped and donated to a local toy drive. I also included some paint, glue and brushes with the kits. Hopefully some of those kits are hanging from ceilings now. I promised the "BOSS"Wink [;)] that from now on I would only buy kits that I would finish...yeah rightTongue [:P]. What she don't know won't hurt me.

There isn't enough bandwidth for my list :D

I finally threw away the giant Tamiya Harley Davidson 1200 with sidecar that I got MOSTLY done, but so screwed up the paint job that I gave up. That thing was around so long it got moved between three homes.

I have a Hasegawa Stuka that only need the canopy frame painted. For 8 years now.

A half dozen or so vinyl and resin figure kits that I assembled and just stopped painting a few years ago.

The Horizon resin '50s Batmobile came to a screaching halt when I got to the vacuform canopy. I hate vacuform canopies.

There are almost certainly a couple of hundred models among the 1000+ on my "to do" shelves that were started and put back in the box.

I have an old F-86 that I started before I joined the USAF...in April of 1989...that needs to be finished. The parts are still sitting in the little toolbox that I use for old parts. I also have another pre-USAF model, a Klingon Bird of Prey that needs finished...it is almost done and I keep threatening my wife that I will finish it. I also have a Ford Mustang that has been in the works since 1995. Come to think of it, almost all of my models are still in some stage of "in-progress"!Big Smile [:D]

I've had few "Bench Queens" over the years that never saw completion:

Monogram 1/48 F-4J Phantom II
Revell Germany 1/144 Airbus A340
Heller 1/72 Mirage IV
Airfix 1/72 DeHavilland Mosquito
Monogram 1/72 Space Shuttle

All memories now that never lifted off of the bench. Interupted, frustrating, or otherwise I never got to see what they could be (a few of them just were'nt worth the effort)

Well, let's see. . .

We have a 1/72 Monogram A-10 Warthog (LOUSY fit!) that ended up in
the spare parts box when it was replaced by the Hasegawa 'Hog.

Then there's an Esci-Ertl 1/72 F/A-18 Hornet. Very poor quality molding; about
the only thing worth keeping was the decal sheet. Most of it didn't even make
it into the parts box. There's a Hasegawa kit waiting in my stockpile to replace it.

Last but not least, a Klingon battle cruiser that needs just needs assembly
of the major components and painting. That's been waiting close to ten years
now. .. one of these days I WILL finish it !!

Hmmm... Inspite of being an ameteur and relatively new to the hobby I have an Academy 1/48 MiG 29 still gathering dust instead of paint...I used the wrong Ejector seat!!!So cant get myself to go on!! Then there are the Thunderbolts, Mustangs and Corsairs that need the canopy painted.. Like coldwar68 My kits never seem to get completed....But that does'nt stop me from buying new kits though!!! Talk about addiction!!!

Cheers,

The closest I think I'll come to not finishing a model is the AH-1S I'm now weathering. Yep, you're right, that's mighty close to being finished, but it is missing three parts - the rear rotor pitch assembly, the tail skid, and a radio antenna.

So, it's going to be about 99% done till I get ambitious enough to make a tail skid and antenna (just a matter of bending some wire to look right and painting). Not sure what I'm going to for the pitch rotor. However, I suspect I'll be building another kit or two of this bird - see, i used Twobobs decals and absolutely loved them, and I've got enough left for two more models. So what I'm thinking is when I get another kit or two, I'll figure out how to make a resin copy of the pitch assembly. A little varstiy for me, but an opportunity to improve skills, right?

Of course, I guess I violate the "will never be finished" part of this, as I intend to EVENTUALLY finish it Wink [;)]

By the way, the kit is Monogram's 1/48 AH-1S - the old one with raised panel lines and all. you know, just in case anyone had a rear rotor pitch assembly they needed to part with Tongue [:P]

Wow! This is an old thread that I just found. Interesting, though.

The two that come first to mind are:

an Auroa C-141 and the Black Hole Cygnus. Any questions on why they won't be touched?? Didn't think so!! lol

But I also have:
AMT(?) Batmobile from the first movie. Just can't seem to get a nice, smooth, shiny, black surface on it.
StarTrek NG Enterprise D. Can't handle the Aztec paint pattern!
Monogram 1/48 Panzer IV. Who builds 1/48 armor anymore!!

Hope somebody gets around to reading, and starting back up, this thread

Clear Sailing;

I've had this 1/72 Hasegawa F-14B Bombcat that I started about 3 years ago and got as far as a lousy hand brushed acrylic paint job that looks like it was put on with a 4 inch brush.

It's so bad, the fuselage looks like a Ju52 (Corregated!)

It's a shame, as it's quite a nice kit, but I made a pigs ear of the paint job, so now it languishes in the bottom of my model cupboard.

I suppose if I took a whole pile of wet and dry to it I could resurrect it, but I just can't bring myself to do it!

Cheers,

While my list isn't as long as some, but I have a few
Tamiya's 20mm flak wagon
dml's 57mm mule
monograms f9f panther (going for parts)
Monogram F4j - real interesting paint scheme, got bogged down with super scale plane data decals
1/72nd pogo
2 revell 1/32 AH-1G's - going for scratch built project
a vindicator - limited run kit, where I started redoing the canopy
I am sure that I have a few others in some boxes some where - but in general, I finish what I start . - NOTBig Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

I think that the real question is: Why do some kits become bench queens?
3d modelling is an option a true mental excercise in frusrtation

My list and why.

Revell (reboxed Hawk) 1/48 scale F2H Banshee. Completed scratch building the cockpit, main wheel wells, main gear and nose gear. Left to do is the nose gear well and intakes and engine front. I just haven't found a way to do the intakes.

Monogram/Hobbycraft 1/48 scale RF-80C. Used the Monogram F-80C fuselage and Hobbycraft RT-33A nose and started building the RF-80C. The parts went together like oil and water. Too much sanding trying to get the parts flush and ended up sanding a hole in the nose. Filled with putty and resanded making it worse.

Monogram 1/48 MIG-29. Started with the conversion kit to cure all the problems and then a better Academy MIG-29 came out.

Berny

 Phormer Phantom Phixer

On the bench

TF-102A Delta Dagger, 32nd FIS, 54-1370, 1/48 scale. Monogram Pro Modeler with C&H conversion.

Revell F-4E Phantom II 33rd TFW, 58th TFS, 69-260, 1/32 scale.

Tamiya F-4D Phantom II, 13th TFS, 66-8711, 1/32 scale.  F-4 Phantom Group Build.

2 revell monogram kits....

1 f-14D super tomcat and 1 f-15c eagle. both built but unpainted and no decals (because i didnt' have an airbrush at the time and better off leaving them unpainted than try to do it with a brush)

I am in the process of trying to paint the eagle, but I think I might use that for a test model.

Evil [}:)]I've been moving so much in the last 5 years, i've got quite a load of unfinished kits,
1/48 AMT F7F-3N just needs LDG installed
1/48 AMT P-40F needs final assy & painted
1/48 AMT S-3A needs Gloss coat & decaled & weathered
1/48 Academy F-111A needs gloss coat & decaled & weathered
1/48 ARII FW-190A-8 needs final assy & painted
1/48 Esci A-7D needs decaled & weathered(thinking on getting the Hasegawa kit instead)
1/48 Hasegawa F-4E needs gloss coat & decaled
1/48 Hobbycraft F-94A redo decals
I think you folks get the Idea, my wife wont let me display the finished kits in the Dauthers room cause it's not girlly enough
so all I get to do is at least paint the interiors & cockpits and put then away for the next time or until I move into a larger house and have a room just for the kits to be displayedDisapprove [V]

The one I'll probably never finish is the MPM 1/48 Arado Ar 196A. Painted, decaled and weathered. Then it came time to attach the floats . . .all butt joints, weak plastic struts. It's a shame, though, as I really love the looks of that plane.
