You didn't specify a scale, but steer clear of the Revell-Monogram 1/72 Warthog.
It's a big disappointment. The 1/48 scale is supposed to be better, but I haven't built it.

I have built the Hasegawa 1/72 scale and that's a nice kit.

The 1/48 scale Monogram A-10 kit is a good one. It can be built into a very good looking model. It goes together very well with little filling or sanding needed.

Go with the Revel-Monogram 1/48 A-10. Great Bang for the Buck, good accuracy, looks great when finished. If anything, I might reccomend aftermarket decals.

I bought the 2 seater A-10 from Trumpeteer and it has alot of detail. Other than the cockpit, this kit is impressive!

I had a few problems with the Monogram A-10 but overall it is a great kit. They were mostly fit problems that were easily corrected. If you want to super detail, go with Trumpeter's 1/32 A-10. I think it is the best "Hog" model out there.

Hy.
I'm building a Trumpeter A-10A, it's an excellent kit although it requires aftermarket accessories such as a good cockpit. It's a good choice, it has engraved panel lines and it fits pretty well. There are huge possibilities of detailling it.

If your looking for A-10 warthog or thunderbolt, You could try ITALIERI. Been building ITALIERIs for two years. It has good details, accurate and 2 or more decal options. SOme of its kits have been repackaged by TAMIYA in the warbirds series. How did I know? I bought and built an ITALIERI F-16C/D Night Falcon, then though of building another one from TAMIYA, and laugh coz it (TAMIYA) contained the same kit and decals. It has also good weapons loadout (which important to some modelers).

I know there are two kit out from ITALIERI, one is a desert scheme and the other an O-10A but forgot which scale is which but for sure it 1/72 or 1/48.

I bought the Academy 1/72 A-10 recently.

You'll want an aftermarket cockpit and a Hasegawa weapons set (weapons are in the kit but not well shaped)

For 1/72 its not bad, the shapes and contours are about right and I've run into no real fit problems.

If you by chance run across the old Matchbox A-10 (not likely, but if you do) don't touch it unless you REALLY know your stuff about the A-10. That kit came out in the 70s and actually represents two prototype versions. Its gun looks way too small, but If I recall correctly the prototypes did, for a while, have 20mm cannons in place of the 30mm service version.

The recomendation for Italeri is a good one, but watch out for Italeri decals, I've never had a lot of luck with them sticking down

In 48th the Monogram Hog is the way to go. Great detail, typical of the old Monogram kits but still with raised lines. Dead [xx(] I guess that's why God invented scribing tools. Tongue [:P]

All the others pale in comparison, even Tamiya's kit. 72nd, I dunno. I'm not a "little scaler". Oh, the Revell & LS 1/144 kits look pretty nice too. Trumpeter's monster looks nice in the box and looks okay built-up.

But for the raised panel lines, I gotta agree with the Monogram kit.

For insanely good aftermarket cockpit and detail sets for the Trumpeter kit, go to www.meteorprod.com and look up their Cutting Edge detail sets (and decals). The cockpit is so good that the bang-seat actually slides up and down the ejection rails on its little molded-on rollers.

1/72 - It's either Hasegawa or Italeri. I agree with the others on Monogram's but I'm not concerned with raised panel lines. No problem once the model is painted. Some people like the Tamiya kit but I tried it once and didn't care for it...

Revelograms raised panel lines get such a bad rap... poor little lines get no love. Although I prefer recessed, raised isn't anything to loose sleep over. If you sand them off you can reasonably re-create them with a pencil line.

In my humble opinoin, unless your willing to dish out well over a $100 to do Trumpeters 1/32 A-10 justice, go the Revelogram 1/48 hog route. For less than $20 you will not be dissapointed.

Here's another one to consider. I bought a 1/48 A10A by a Chinese firm called Zhengdefu in the UK for 5 pounds. I was told it was a retro engineered Tamiya kit. ( I also bought an F111) It's actually not bad, about on a par with the Revell kit though the decals were awful. Still, for the price it makes up (with some work) into an impressive looking model. If you can find one in the states it's worth considering, or try mail order from a UK stockist, at this price you can get two!

For my tastes, I have to agree with the 1/32 Trumpeter, but only with the aftermarket kits. I am working on the N/AW variant with Verlinden cockpit and external details, as well as the Eduard Armament Detail Kit. It's a bit of an investment, but i guarantee you that the results do not disappoint. With the upgrades, either kit builds into museum quality without much fuss.

If it's your first A-10, start with Monogram... If you want pretty darned good stuff, try the Trumpeter 1/32. It's in the er, ah, wings, ready to be created. I popped the box and was pretty impressed. The Monogram's raised lines are a little old but it's a great way to crash-course detailing. You'll have fun with it- it goes together very well, and the cockpit begs for attention. Post some pics when it's done... and have fun!
