Looking for an F-9F-8 Cougar in 1/48
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 12:24 PM
Collect-Aire seems to be the only maker of a 1/48 scale F-9F-8, also known as the AF-9J. Does anyone know of a mainstream kit manufacturer that did the model?

Thanks for the info.

pishnaris,,
I believe that the Cougar will be a future release w/ Hobbycraft in quater scale along w/ the Panther.
I have heard the release date will be either May or June or when ever Hobbycraft descides to release them.
I'll believe them when I have the Cougar and Panther in my hot lil hands.Tongue [:P]

I think that Revell-Monogram has a 1/48th Panther in its Promodeler series. I'm pretty sure that it is a Panther, it might be a Cougar though.

Hobbycraft has had the Cougar on its "to be released" list for a very long time now. I think it was supposed to be released around December of 2000, but along with the Panther its release has yet to come. To be released in May or June? We'll see... I think it'll be more of whenever Hobbycraft decides to release them. The -2 Panther, and the -6 and -8 versions of the Cougar were the ones on their list. I would love to see these released too. I would be a heavy invester in the F9F-2!

Pishnaris, Revell makes a 1/48 F9F-8 Cougar. I found mine at a local hobby shop and they had 2 or 3 others on the shelf. It's not a very detailed kit but it is the only 1/48 Cougar I know of. I want to do mine in Blue Angels markings, so if anybody knows where to find decals i would appreciate it if you would let me know. I hope this helps you. Mikee

The Revell Cougar is very old. The one that can still be generally found is a re-release of the 1950s kit. It is slightly smaller than 1/48 scale though. I have one, and when I test fitted a spare Monogram F9F Panther cockpit and nose gear well it was way too big! I checked the parts against some scale drawings I have, and sure enough the Cougar was a bit too small! I'd estimate it at 1/50 scale. It is going to be one of my long term projects. I don't know of anyone that has released 1/48 Blue Angel decals for them. You might try to find a sheet of the Blues' Panthers and use what you could out of that, and paint the rest. I have seen a few of these kits completely updated and they looked amazing. Good luck.

The Revell Cougar kit is a re release of the old Hawk kit. No wheel well detail, no cockpit detail, in fact no detail at all. I tried using parts from the Monogram F-9F3 and nothing fit. I finally threw it away years ago. I would love to see a 1/48 scale Cougar.
