VMF-214 Blacksheep Decals
Posted by lgevent on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 11:03 PM
Does Anyone know if there are any aftermarket decals for Greg Boyington or VMF-214. I know there are markings for his plane in the 1/72 Testor Corsair kit. What about 1/48, 1/32???

Hi Igvent,

I'm aware of the following for Greg Boyingtons Corsairs in 1/48.

Cutting Edge CED48226, decals for White 86, White 883, White 915 and White 740, all with VMF-214.

Eagle Strike ESP48085, markings for White 86 only.

Hope this helps,

I recall reading that #86 had the kill marks and names applied only for publicity photos ( taken in a rear area, I think ), and that Boyington never actually flew that airplane in combat.

Superscale made set 48-038 F4UCorsair that had
one of Boyington's aircraft white 86. Cutting Edge made
set CED48121 Corsair nose art pt. 2 with one aircraft
from VMF-214, #576 Marines dream, F4U-1. This aircraft
is included in Academy's 1/48 th F4U-1Corsair kit #2204.
All of the above are 1/48th scale. hope this helps.

Aeromaster (now a part of Eaglestrike Decals) used to make a special set called U.S. Navy/ U.S. Marine Top Guns. It had markings for Hellcats, Corsairs, and Wildcats, and was an impressive collection. One of the Corsairs was Boyington's white 86 Lulu Bell. about the kill markings and name- I heard a similar story. The one I heard is that white 86 was his actual combat aircraft, but as was mentioned the kill markings were only put on for press photos. After that was done, Boyington supposedly had all the flags removed to keep from scaring Japanese pilots away!

That well-known photo of Boyington in the cockpit of #86 was taken in a rear area hundreds of miles from the combat zone during November of 1943 while 214 was preparing for it's next tour. The victory flags were applied in a hurry ( some upside-down ), and the names were applied with water-based white paint. Less than a day later Boyington was on a transport plane heading back to combat.

The above info is from a recent well researched biography of Boyington titled "Black Sheep One" by Bruce Gamble. Bruce has also written a book about VMF-214 titled "The Black Sheep". Both books are excellent reads.
