Paint Colors (Federal Standard & Heller)
Posted by rodc on Friday, May 16, 2003 8:39 AM
Hi,

I am starting two different kits that refer to colors I am unfamiliar with and was wondering if anyone on the list can help out.

The first is Heller’s 1/72 Canadair CL415 Water Tanker. Heller is a new kit to me and I have problems with the color assignments. The colors in the instructions are listed as 19 (bright red), 34 (matt white), 40 (pale gray), 56 (aluminum), 69 (yellow), 80 (matt grass green) and 85 (coal black). Does the numbers refer to a specific color system such as a Heller paint line or is it just numbered for reference. Ideally, if there are Humbrol or Testors equivalents for the colors, that would be a big help.

My second kit is HobbyCraft 1/72 EA-6B Prowler that refers to four different colors which, I think, are all gray shades and includes FS36375, FS36320, FS35237 and metal. Is there an equivalency chart for Federal Standard colors that can be matched to Humbrol and/or Testors? For the metal, I guess I could use the Testors metal line such as the aluminizor.

My last question, sorry to ramble, is the best way to do the camo pattern on the Prowler. The three shades blend from darkest at the very top, the medium shade in the middle and finally the lightest at the base and bottom of the fuselage. Should I mask and spray or use a fine spray without masking to try to blend the colors.

I have recently restarted my childhood hobby after a 20 year hiatus and have found the resources in the forum invaluable. I look forward to any comments.

RODC:Can't help you with first part since I have no reference for brand of paint indicated. Some one else may know which manafacturer Heller refers to . Second part is a reference to IPMS Stockholm and link to their color charts section. All the information is there. As for the prowler ideally it should be done freehand light color to darker ones. Depends on your ability with the airbrush.Hope this helps:Chief John

The numbers on the Heller sheet are stock numbers for Humbrol paints. If you can't get them locally, check the cataloges of some mail order places such as Squadron or Roll Models, the two I like to use. Squadron includes a picture or color chip in their on line cataloges. Testors includes the FSN on the label of their bottle if it applies. I have seen some published cross references for paint from different companies, but don't remember where for sure. The was one in FSM, but I don't remember if it was for current camo. Senior moment I suppose.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Hi Rodc,

The Heller numbering system is exactly the same as Humbrols.

19 Bright Red (Heller) = 19 Gloss Bright Red (Humbrol).
34 Matt White (Heller) = 34 Matt White (Humbrol).
40 Pale Grey (Heller) = 40 Gloss Pale Grey (Humbrol).
56 Aluminium (Heller) = 56 Metallic Matt Aluminium (Humbrol).
69 Yellow (Heller) = 69 Gloss Yellow (Humbrol).
80 Matt Grass Green (Heller) = 80 Matt Grass Green (Humbrol).
85 Matt Black (Heller) = 85 Satin Coal Black (Humbrol).

Best bet is to find a model shop that stocks Humbrol Paints!

Hope this clears things up, should be a nice bright model when it's done!

Cheers,

Rob M.

Changing the subject slightly, does anyone know if there is a conversion formula between the old Airfix paint numbers (eg; M1,G8) and the current Humbrol numbers? Or do you just have to guess?
