Exactly.

I said something similar about the Spitfire on another forum which shall remain nameless (begins with an "H" and ends in "yperscale") and got jumped on for it.

I wasn't surprised, I've frequented that forum enough to know what type of folks hang out there. And I realize that we all are in this hobby for our own reasons. But I never get over the obstinancy of some people, especially when comparing very subtle cowl contours on the Hasegagme and Tamiya Spitfire V kits. Tongue [:P]

As for the Tamiya A-10, if you want to build an FSD aircraft, go ahead. (USCUSN, is the cockpit detail all that bad in the Tamiya kit? I just can't remember!) I personally would like to build one as it might have appeared in Europe during the early-mid 80's. But that's 'cuz I read too much Tom Clancy as a kid...

The Tamiya A-10 is a preproduction version, though it builds to
a nice model, has engrave lines. This is a good case where the better choice is the Monogram A-10, at 1/2 the price. Though all the aftermarket sets are for the Monogram kit, I will build the Tam A-10 anyway, (I have both). Do the necessary mods to update it to at least a Desert Storm bird. Never seen the F-15. But you must build the Wildcat, it is a sweet kit. Every manufacture has their share of ho hum kits yes that includes Hasegawa and Tamiya. But if it looks like an A-10 then it is!

starcheck229,
Love those Mustangs. Tamiya's releasing the 8thAF aces P-51D
edition with Big Beautiful Doll and Glamourus Glennis . They sure look good!!
So much for the modeling budget. LeeTree's right they're high quality kits.

Starcheck,

Tamiya's kits, in general, are, indeed, excellent. Some of the older kits aren't as nice as the modern stuff, but that's simply 'cuz they're products of their time.

The P-51D kit is an excellent kit overall. I mostly prefer it to the Hasegagme Stang, but there's one thing that I really don't like about it.

The canopy is molded in two pieces, the clear bubble and the rail. It's tough to get a great looking join with that type of arrangement, and the sprue attachment point on the clear part demands great care when cutting the part off of the sprue.

If that doesn't bother you, then the Tamiya Stang is for you. It's perhaps one of the easiest kits I've yet made.

The F-15 and the A-10 kits by Tamiya are old kits. I believe they're from the 70's, maybe as late as the early 80's. I'm not too familiar with either, especially the F-15.

If I remember it had raised panel lines and the cockpit didn't have great detail. I could be wrong on both counts, I've only seen the kit once.

The A-10 I've had a few times, never built it though. It had engraved lines but, again if I recall correctly, it lacked good cockpit detail. I also remember something about that kit representing a non-production aircraft. Something about missing the Pave Penny pod and having the early ejection seat. I don't remember specifically.

Anyhoo, I'm sure both are decent kits, Tamiya has made few dogs over the years, even with the old stuff. I dunno how far you go when building, but if you're into resin and such, there's enuff stuff out there to bring either of these kits up to par with modern day kits. That is if you find them lacking. It all comes down to personal preference.

I have to admit I haven't built any of the kits you mentioned, but I've built probably 40 or 50 different Tamiya kits over the last 25 years - and I'd have to say that every one of them were worth the money spent. You really have to mess things up fairly severely to end up with a Tamiya model that doesn't have perfect fit.
They go together extremely well, have teriffic sharp detail, and almost always have excellent and correct contours.
I've built their cars, planes, motorcycles, tanks, armored vehicles and a couple of ships, and I've never ever been disappointed with any of their kits. There never seems to be any variation in the quality of any of their kits - they're all good.
You will be hard pressed to find a company that makes a better product. I'm sure that the vast majority of modellers out there will mirror my remarks. If they don't, I'll eat my shorts.
Have a good one,
LeeTree

Cheers, LeeTree

Most of the kits I prefer are from Hasegawa. However, after building the Tamiya F4U Corsair, I'm really getting hooked on the Tamiya 1/48 kits. Anyone out there ever build the Tamiya A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-15C, or P-51D? If so, what did you think of them? Any input would be appreciated!
