Ghost Grey Color Scheme?
Posted by rjkplasticmod on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 9:25 PM
I have built an extensive collection of WWII Birds, mostly 1/48 scale, but relatively few modern ones. The recent Iraqi conflict inspired me to build a few of our main attack AC. I bought a Hasegawa 1/48 FA-18 a few weeks ago and build has progressed pretty well although this kit is a lot more complex than your average WWII fighter. The model is nearing the painting stage, so I bought some Testors Model Master Enamel paints for the Light Ghost Grey and Dark Ghost Grey scheme. When I sprayed a test strip, it appears that both colors are much too dark compared to my references. Before I waste a lot of paint determining how much to lighten the greys I thought some of you modern stovepipe modelers might have a suggestion. I do prefer Enamel paints but would be happy to consider an Acrylic alternative. Thanks.

Try and find out what FS colors are used in the F/A-18's TPS scheme. I dunno if it's changed since the 80's but back then the colors were:

FS 35237 - Blue (Anti-Glare Panel)
FS 36375 - Light Compass Ghost Gray (Upper color)
FS 36495 - Light Gray (Lower color)

The above FS numbers were those used in the F/A-18 TPS scheme during the early to mid or late 80's. I don't know if the scheme has changed since then, and if so what the FS colors may be.

The color names are those called out in the IPMS Color Cross-Reference Guide. (I know, the anti-glare panel isn't "BLUE", but the color is a 35xxx color, and is a flat blue by FS standards.)

In picking paints to match, I would first go by the FS number. Then by the Mk.1 Eyeball and, lastly, by any name that a particular color may be called out as. Some model & paint manufacturers are notorious for mixing up color names with numbers and vice-versa.

Here's a link for a site that will help you with FS colors:

http://www.ipms-earth.com/fs595b/

Even though color values can change from monitor to monitor, the color samples on this site match up pretty closely with the FS 595B fan deck, the basis from which this site was created.
