Is this the scheme you're talking about?



Here's another shot showing several birds in this scheme. I've enlarged a portion of the photo and lightened it. It doesn't really give any clue as to the color of the undersurface of the wings. But it does show that the yellow, as per specs, wraps under the leading edge slightly. In the enlargment you can see on the lower aircraft, toward the wingtip, a lighter area which indicates this. Also, close examination shows a continuity of relative tone along the entire leading edge. This is also discernable on the higher aircraft, but to a lesser degree.





As for the color of the underside of the wing, if I had to guess, I'd say that it's the same color that's on the lower fuselage. But not being satisfied with a guess, I'm gonna dig a bit further and see if I can't find sumthin' more conclusive.

In addition to my bud doin his digging, I did my own researching.
I found that the under wing color is Aluminum lacquer("in action" book series).
I went a lil bit further and found some decals by AeroMaster(#48-411) and the particular a/c that you want to do also says that the under wing is Aluminum lacq.
Hopefully this helps ya out.

Is the underside of the center float alum lacq also?

Here's the relevant part of the AMD 48-411 instruction sheet.



I still have doubts as to the color of the underside of the wings. I've come across some references to BuAer Directives that indicate that this part of the aircraft should be the same as the other undersurfaces, but nothing yet specifically mentioning this combination of colors as suggested on the AMD sheet and in the Squadron in Action. And I thought it might have to do with the Chrome yellow itself; perhaps there was a directive stating that any upper airfoil surface finished in Yellow should be bare metal or doped silver underneath. But I have yet to come across any such reference. Hmmm...

Mike, I don't have that book anymore, sold it awhile ago. What exactly does it say about this? Is it in the center section with the profiles? Or is it somewhere else in the book? My curiosity is now peaked!

Hey Blackwolf,
Right now Wall-eye has the book. But if I'm not mistaken there is a shot of the a/c like Saul wants to do banking a lil and its a lighter color than the top of the wing. Also there is a sheen to the lower wing(which means nothing).
I may have seen this particular pic in another book but for some reason I want to say I saw it in the "in action" book. I must get the book back from wall-eye.

Hello to you all
according the official monogram us navy&marines aircraft color guide on page 31 it says the top is chrome yellow extending aft on the lower surface approximately five percent of the cord,with the colors to be blended in such a manner as not to form a ridge or other aerodynamic protrusion..the remaining external surfaces were to be painted glossy aircraft grey.
