Lady Be Good (large pics)
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, January 30, 2005 4:44 PM
Here are some pics of Lady Be Good after being found by an Army survey crew. These are from the personal collection of the gentleman pictured who was on that crew, and I thought I would share them.

Thanks for sharing. I can tell Shep Paine did a superb job on his diorama of the Lady that is shown in his first edition diorama book.

Thanks for posting the pictures. The "Lady" saga has always been fascinating to me. One of the gunners, I think his name was Sgt Adams, was from Eureka, Illinois, which is about 10 miles from my home town. Shep Paine's diorama really was top quality. Darwin Alien [alien]

If I remember the story correctly the Lady Be Good was discovered by an oil exploration crew who informed the US. The US sent in a crew to find the remains of the aircrew. I know they found remains, but I do not remember if all of the crew was accounted for. I think the aircraft was discovered in the late 1950s (1959 I think) so it was long after the end of the war.

It is good to know that the U.S. would go to such lenghts to recover the remains of its servicemen and return them to the family. If I remember right the remains of a B-24 was discovered in China a few years ago and a team was sent in to recover any indication of the remains of the crew members, eg dog tags.

Graves Registration teams are in and out of Viet Nam on a regular basis, and have been since Clinton "normalized" relations with that government.

Lastly, I cannot recall if the remains of the Lady Be Good were gathered up and brought back to the States. Does anybody know?

Thanks for sharing the pictures. rangerj

(edit: I guess I shouldn't take so long to type, huh? Well, I ain't gonna change any of it now... hehe...)

To answer a couple questions...

All the crew were found but one, S/Sgt. Vernon Moore.

Various parts of the aircraft have made their way back to the USA, but the bulk of the wreck was recovered in 1994 and last I heard it was being stored outdoors in Tobruk:

The best image I've come across showing the wreck in this location...

There's a good bit of repetition in these pages but each has its singularities...
