Blackhawk Aftermarket Decals?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 1, 2003 9:37 AM
Does anyone know where I could get some decals for a 1/48 scale UH-60 Blackhawk. It was originally an Italeri Pavehawk, but I decided I liked it in black, without the huge probe on the front, as seen in the film Black Hawk Down. The thing is, the decals that come with the kit are black, meaning that if I paint the chopper in flat black (or maybe NATO black) the decals won't show up. So i need 1/48 Blackhawk decals that will shop up on top of NATO black, and are for the US version.

Whaz up GT,
I'm not too sure off hand if any body makes AM decals for the UH-60's.
I know one of the IPMS shows they did a special decal set which included a Customs Blackhawk(overall black w/ gold striping). Now that is one sweet helo.
If anything you could combine other decals to produce the example that you want to build. As long as you have ref material or stills from the movie it should not be a problem my friend.
Flaps up,Mike

If you would listen to everybody about the inaccuracies, most of the kits on your shelf would not have been built Too Close For Guns, Switching To Finger

GT,
I'm not aware of any decals for the Black Hawk for a bird painted black. You might try to post this under Helicopters where more 'rotor heads' like me will see it and increase the odds of finding them if they are available. Good luck.

Well I watched the film and played the game (Delta Force: Black Hawk Down - very close to the film) and the 'Hawks didn't seem to have any visible marking apart from the usual safety stuff. I tried putting the standard black decals on the model anyway, and they actually showed up over the NATO black on the 'Hawk. It looks mighty fine now.

On a side note, I know this isn't the right forum, but does anyone know if 1/48 scale sniper figurines? The Blackhawk I'm trying to make is the 'Hawk that dropped off the two ill-fated, but unbelievably brave, snipers Gary Gordon & Randy Shughart, who volunteered to protect the pilot of the second downed Blackhawk from the hundreds of Somali militia who were about to over-run it. They died trying to save one man, and I honour them greatly for that. So I thought I'd built the Blackhawk that dropped them off, and if possible have the two snipers inside the 'Hawk.

GT_500,

Here's some info that you may find of interest.

Below is a link to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) website. Known as the Night Stalkers, this is the unit that provided air transport for Task Force Ranger during Operation GOTHIC SERPENT.

http://www.nightstalkers.com/

If you click on "History" and "Operations" you'll find a whole lotta info about that fateful day of 3rd October, 1993. Just follow any links to "BlackHawk Down", "Gothic Serpent" or "Task Force Ranger".

There's not much in the way of photo reference on this site but I have several shots of SPECOPS helos that you may be interested in. I'll include them below.

The following shot is of an MH-60L DAP. (Defensive Armed Penetrator) This is basically a Gunship.

The following shots are of another MH-60L DAP.

Notice the overall conspicuous lack of ID markings, except the "United States Army" in olive drab on the first helo. All stencilling also appears to be OD. And the personal marking "Southern Comfort" on the DAP is also of interest.

The first aircraft is, indeed, overall black which has weathered to varying degrees, taking on a dark gray look. The second also appears to be black.

The third one is hard to tell. It could be black, or it could be that very dark OD that the army uses on it's helos. It's faded in some spots to a tannish-brown color that is typical of faded dark OD. It could be grunged up or it could just be the lighting. But I'd still go with the black.

Hope these are of use!
